Well it is still a good circuit to understand how to breakdown and isolate to troubleshoot for many a vehicles prior to the 40,000 computer module models, but I'm pretty frign certain I ain't going to see you try to take a hybrid out there hahaha so therefore this may certainly help you someday.

Got a feeling it is a dodgy ignition contacts mate for that starter issue, provided you have replaced starter solenoid at times of starter and check the terminal on the exciter wire is not corroded where it is first clamped by the connector terminal (starter end obviously mate)
Even just cut off the one there and refit new terminal to eliminate that all together, and of that is good id definitely check the terminals are not fried or partially burnt at relay (under bonnet) then also the fuse and then chase that back mate really is only the dodgy contacts in the key mate and if you feel any slop in the ignition via the key then I'd near put my money on it that you should just run a separate dedicated Button to send the power down to starter motor and simply bypass the ignition altogether and id confirm these by pulling that relay next time it happens and bridge it from terminal that will show constant voltage [Power for the Control Side of Relay]
and a quick continuity test holding 1 end of your lead at starter end of exciter wire and poke the remaining terminal at relay (preferably the most likely one you think it will be the simply poking everything) provided you got the power one located then you are not going to hurt anything mate and after you locate the terminal that shows continuity from the multimeter and then simply poke that wire u have into the power wire terminal and then without hesitation to minimise the arc, shove it into the terminal that feeds to the exciter wire and if that fires as per normal then you can safely say your issue is likely from the relay box back to the firewall and to the ignition.
Quite a simple procedure mate but rather give you as much detail as I can there so you know you are good with what your about to do and understand the result from what is found from doing this step.

I had a similar starter issue with my (automatic gearbox) Falcon, found out the neutral safety switch sometimes thought it was still in gear and thus not allow it to crank at all unless the starter was shorted.

For the starter: I think its prone to sit tooth on tooth with the flywheel. maybe rocking it back and forth while in park solves the issue.

The starter probably needs new copper washers or plates that sit inside the actual starter motor. Could be wiring
