playing a dirtbag from chicago in his two main roles and not playing the same character twice is great acting

Here goes nothing:
Please check out Star Trek: Discovery character Michael Burnham. The actress (Sonequa Martin-Green) does a FANTASTIC job in the role and is incredibly intentional about her acting choices😭😭

was headchef at a mid place for 3 years. when you care about every single plate that leaves the kitchen; that each one is always perfect, you've set yourself up for a very toxic relationship with your work. when you complement a chef for how good the plate was, the chef hears 'blah blah, none what im saying matters, because i know youre in your own head worried about the next plate, or you're in your own head thinking about the last one blah blah"

there's a certain irony to it. you hear about "thankless" jobs. and i can assure you that hearing praise means nothing to a person who's attention is with the finest of details and the splitting and counting of seconds. A restaurant is something to work at or own, not run.
If you do both, you'll burn through yourself in a hurry

I love this show for capturing what its actually like to work in a restaurant and showing people what these workers often desl with. I hope sone people learned to show More respect to restaurant workers from watching it because far too many people take them for granted and assume its an easy job

As a person who comes from a long line of restaurant owners, chefs, waiters... I can't watch the show because it is so painfull to watch. It's too true . 😢😢😢 I can't even go to a restaurant anymore because of the PTsD from it . restaurants are 24 hr problems. This actor is so good as 🎉🎉🎉Chef.

I think just because of similar both Shameless and The Bear in premise and tone, a lot of people compare the likes of Jeremy Allen White character side by side. With similarities like them being low income, having smoking habits, being from a dysfunctional families, and having an unremovable skills that goes beyond what others perceive of them...

But the characters differences are much louder and so what Jeremy does with his approach. Like Lip Gallaher is someone who is very smart both book wise and street wise, but lacks emotional awareness with anybody outside of his family. He's smart he is the lacks the drive, and direction to go further. He's not fidgety or awkward he just goes for it with a lack of thought. And, with his family he alongside his sister are emotionally stunted from being the parents that their parents never were. So White's approach is more calm, yet cocky, with a charming demeanor you have to admire but something that is really a cover up to deeper issues.

On the other hand, Carmen never squanders an opportunity, while doesn't have Lip's intelligence. He has both emotional intelligence and awareness that doesn't make the chip on his shoulder as noticeable. He doesn't necessarily have the charisma that Lip does, but Carmen's determination and passion is so admirable that people come to him even if he pushes them away. With Jeremy Allen White's interruption making Carmen so dedicated, bold, and admirable that you will follow even if harms his life. But is someone is trying to continue to grow with the people around him. That's why I think Jeremy Allen White's performance tops Shameless, but just the show tops Shameless in all fronts.

Fantastic analysis essay! I never noticed the physical ticks but think your totally right. They're all an expression of his mind. Amazing that Jeremy Allen White even has that level of skill and depth to so consistently convey that level of character.

If you guys like The Bear I highly recommend reading The Dishwasher by Stephane Larue (especially if you remember what it was like living in Quebec in the late 90’s/early 2000’s and/or are a gambling addict lol). I’m only halfway through the book but it manages to capture the grimy ordered chaos of the kitchen as accurately as this show does, just in literary form. I only worked food service for a year and I could feel my blood pressure rising in some chapters.

Thanks for the vid! ❤

Carmy hardly makes eye contact, but stares at Syd when she cooks because he wants that joy she has in her craft, stares at Claire because he wants to escape outside of himself, and stares at Richie when arguing with him because he is jealous of Richie’s relationship he had with Carmy’s late brother. I want to see my boy move past these things as the show progresses.

I just started watching The Bear and I was looking for analysis videos to dive deeper into the content. I loved your Succession series and when I saw you had done a video on this show I knew I had to watch it and it didn't disappoint. I humbly request that you do a series of character studies ala Succession for The Bear. I think your talent at detailed analysis would truly elevate the watching of the series. Nobody does analysis videos like you do. Thank you!

Food service is like playing Jazz. Except the best players and the best servers and chefs have no idea how to manage their emotions. I think this is true because of how difficult it is to be truly subsumed into your work, as both require, and to roll with the changes and still keep your rhythm. That mindset doesn't easily lend itself to being able to step back. My psychologist and therapist are always talking about standing back from my emotions and from how they affect me and I get what they mean on the surface, but I can't apply it.

I can't step back. I have spent my whole life stepping up.

Saying The Bear is a show about a chef is like saying The Sopranos is about a mob boss. These shows are magnificent, beautiful works of art because they are character studies.

I feel like Jeremy Allen White brings a lot of pent-up energy to his roles, they always feel like they have a lot on their mind outside of the scene. In Shameless, Lip always felt like he was on the edge of blowing up while in the Bear, Carmy looks like he's about to have a panic attack. Carmy is an incredibly insecure character, he constantly thinks about his flaws and nitpicks his work, JAW's performance drives this home through his anxious nuances.

I don’t get how a guy who drinks, smokes cigarettes, is a workaholic and does nothing outside of work (i.e., never goes to the gym or engages in any sport or exercise) has no body fat and is in great shape. 🤔 either get another actor, or show the guy working out in his free time. This is just stupid. I don’t care about his ‘trauma’. This is part of woke victimhood mentality typical of Gen Z snowflakes. Weak. Just show a good story about a guy starting a restaurant. Why is that so hard to do?
