Piggy backing off your topic about entry level requirements. Why do companies mostly in the realm of MSPs give the title of something like Network Engineer to someone who is essentially level one help desk ? I am sure this happens in an internal environment but it seems that mostly it is MSPs that give out random job titles.

What would be the best path from being a Low Voltage (communications) installer to IT field ? I’m proficient in network systems and how they work, installing switches, converters, devices, terminating CAT6 and alike cables , coax and fiber optics.

I document all my work with meta data that the work order's require. You could say that I'm a field engineer? My most recent projects have been access point deployments in some pretty big warehouses on 40ft skyjacks. The switches I install are pre configured although sometimes I do console in with a remote tech with putty for troubleshooting. Using packet tracer ( now going to try GNS3 ) It helped for sure. Having the experience that I do after a year of solo work like this I feel has lead me to think becoming a network engineer is for me.

Every one who didn't dive deep into networking doesn't know that networking is like medicine knowing about routing and switching doesn't make u a network engineer it's like a general doctor
You literally need to know about these to become a real network engieer :-

Network security and risk mitigater
Cloud services and computing
Python Network programming and automation
Wireless and voice networks
Linux and Microsoft a client will ask u that his device isn't responding to the voip collaboration
Network virtualization & Problem solving
Maintenance and troubleshooting
You want to know a bit about telecommunication and radio communication
Firewalls : Palo Alto Sonic Wall F5 FirePower Fortigate Sopohs UTM Checkpoints SRX : Those are the most popular
Be online for newer technologies like ACI, ISE, DNA, CUCM, VPRN, Puppet, NPB, Insieme Solutions,Policy-based awareness and control
Quality and traffic scheduling and management
And lastly this is recommended by experts will give you more ponus is to nail about 3 or more vendors and their cli.
Cisco
Juniper
Huawei
Extreme
Aruba
Arista
VMware
Netscout
Nokia
Those are the most popular

My path: College, MTA, MCP, A+, ITIL V3, 6 years helpdesk, (did my Commercial pilot’s license in between lol) then 10 years L2 Deskside where I did tons of cabling and racking and configuring for an oil and gas client and then CCNA and yes I forked the $400 and bought some equipment and built a lab and now I am an engineer with a government client. Will be working on CCNP. To be honest you can progress much quicker but, my years as helpdesk and then infrastructure/ deskside have proved invaluable. I jumped from 68 K a year to now 110K .. I must say though, I busted my ass in the field like a dog for a decade and a half. Discipline = freedom (Im Canadian so Im making $81K approx in US dollars for you Americans)

Don’t bother, I’ve been trying for years and never got a shot. Despite some experience and CCNAs and degrees. It’s always the same…Gotta have the experience to get the experience. Or, what have you been doing for the last 6 month? Once I didn’t get the position because I have a CCNA but not a NET+… No company is willing to train unless you are buddy buddy with a hiring manager. After nearly 20 years of trying I finally just tossed my $1000+ Cisco lab equipment and books and gave up. I used to be very passionate about networking but got tired of spending money and time on something I would never attain… so I remain a jack of all traits and master of non… I wish all aspiring neteng folks better luck than I ever had.

Lean to say to users I work on Networking Engineering configuring routers, using Unix, Linux and becoming Cisco certified (Most times a money grab)! I fell into it in 1984 after the adoption of Ethernet Standard wiring up our high school math classroom computers networked with the Librarian new computer to the Principle new Computer (our school had a Kodak grant) through the new switches! That's now how I fell into networking!
