"Fleetwood 125" - Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramway: Thornton Gate on Friday 30th June 2023
"Fleetwood 125" - One hundred and twenty five years of trams to Fleetwood.
On 1st July 1898, the very first electric tram ran to Fleetwood on the ground-breaking interurban Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramroad - said to be the only truly interurban tramway in the United Kingdom (Isle of Man is not part of the UK). Crossbench car 4 did the honours on the day and, exactly 100 years later, on 1st July 1998, Crossbench car 2, on loan from the National Tramway Museum (where it is preserved), ran the same journey at the same time with schoolchildren from Anchorsholme Primary School and Manor Beach Primary School greeting the tram with flags and much cheering just as they had done in 1898.
1st July 2023 marks the 125th anniversary of the opening of the line and it cannot, at least on here, go without being marked as a major milestone in the history of the Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramway.
Too many anniversaries have been missed in the last couple of years, such as the fiftieth anniversary of the one man operated cars in 2022, the seventieth anniversary of the Coronation cars in 2022 and 2023, the fiftieth anniversary of the last of the green and cream towing cars pulling all cream trailers in 2021 and 2022 when it could have been so easily replicated using 675 and T2. All of these anniversaries, as well as Fleetwood 125 could have brought much needed revenue streams to Blackpool Heritage Trams tours but, instead, they have been ignored in order to run the same few trams day in and day out, getting dirtier by the day.
On Friday 30th June 2023, we visited Thornton Gate and photographed the Bombardier Flexity 2 trams in service as well as catching Brush car 631 on a training trip to Fleetwood and return.
Flexity 2s in service were: 002* 003AD* 006 008 009 011 016AD* 017* 018
As the day turns from the end of the first half of 2023 into 1st July 2023, we arrive at that 125th anniversary of trams to Fleetwood.
