Sudanese women fleeing war found solace and support in the Emirates of Sharjah and Ajman, rebuilding their lives and overcoming post-war trauma through community connections.
Sulaima El Gaddal, a 45-year-old former corporate communication specialist, fled Sudan in 2023 with her elderly mother and teenage daughter. Forced to leave due to medication shortages, she started anew, working at a boutique stall after reuniting with her sister in the Emirates. "I sacrificed everything to find a new life," she said, reflecting on the trauma of leaving her homeland.
Many others, like Amal Hathra, 58, have also started from scratch. Hathra revived her Sudanese scarf brand, “Tata Tiyab,” after fleeing Sudan for the second time. "Thanks to God, we have restarted from zero," she shared.
The Sudanese Cultural Centre in Sharjah serves as a vital hub for the community, hosting events and discussions to aid in collective healing. Dr. Moez Sherfi, a Sudanese psychologist, emphasized the centre’s role in providing logistical and psychological support. “When someone finds a fellow Sudanese to connect with, it eases their struggles significantly,” he said.
