I've been ignoring those labels for years. I'm sure my gut is a smorgasbord of bacteria.

Use by label is held to the same standard as best before so... what are we actually getting done here?

The crazy thing is we use the same brands at home and in commercial settings. Only the home use products have actual dates on them. I purchased ketchup (one of many things I bought) for my business from a commercial food vendor and looked for the date so long I thought I was missing something. The only items that contain dates are things such as dairy that have to be used by a certain date. All others have the production date and that’s it. However, because of food mishandling in the US st the end-user b-to-c level, I don’t know that it’s wise to remove them. Stores don’t fifo as it is and have expired products on the shelf already. No telling what will happen.

As retail worker, this is a bad news. We usually get those 'Best Before' for free. Well, depend on the delivery status of the item... And now, no free 'garbage food' for us?!

Yeah I had a roommate who would throw away food from the fridge that was past its best before date, I had to convince him it was safe to consume.

Shame on the executives who decided to label best by without use by labels next to it. Never trust a business graduate that didn't take ethics class.

Fun fact; the salt we get from the ocean could be like a millions years old. But when we take it form the ocean and put it in the stores suddenly there is an expiration date on it.

I always figured that the best by date was a corporate creation to get people to throw out perfectly okay food and replace it. These food corporations and agriculture corporations weren't satisfied by the fact that people have to continually replace their food because they always have to eat. They wanted people to be replacing it faster, hence, the best by date which would cause people to replace their food more often giving more money needlessly to these corporations. So I always told everyone I knew not to pay attention to the best by date.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that when a product was nearing its exp date the supermarket would have to reduce the price. Now they get to sell it at full price and you can play a few bonus games of "is that mold, rot or just the packaging" and "how many days can this be in the fridge before I get food poisoning".

The sheer number of time my last manager fell back on "best by doesn't mean sell by or goes bad after" on soda and chips that customers returned because they were 8 months or more past the 'best by' date and were disgusting. We even tried taking them out of the stock and somehow they would end up back in the cases. Anything to avoid taking a few dollars loss on something purchased a year ago I guess...

My wife won't let me eat food in our fridge that has "expired." I make a big point of taking it out of the fridge, but then I put it into another container and eat it any way. I never throw anything away unless it is really "bad." Meaning if there is something else already eating it, I won't.
