The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 is a versatile twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft, which includes the variants MD-81, MD-82, MD-83, and MD-88. The variants look virtually identical to each other on the exterior but may contain upgrades to the engines, avionics, and fuel capacity. The MD-80SF branded dedicated
freighter is actually an MD-83 whose conversion was carried out by AEI (Aeronautical Engineers, Inc.). The AEI conversion is the only certified conversion for the MD-80 available in the market today.
The freighter conversion consists of a modification of the main deck to a Class E cargo compartment and the installation of a large cargo door, which is hydraulically operated from the inside of the aircraft by an
independent system. Hydraulic pressure can be applied electrically or manually using a hand pump. The usable cargo area is large enough to support ULD containers or netted pallets in 12 positions or ULDs longitudinally oriented in 8 positions.
The MD-80 can operate from most commercial airports with suitable runway lengths.
