In this flashback clip from last April, DJ Vlad breaks down the differences in gambling and investing, as disregarding conventional wisdom they're actually far from the same thing. During the segment, Vlad uses an example of betting on a Golden State Warriors game as opposed to investing in the team, pointing out that when you gamble you walk away without any ownership as opposed to becoming a shareholder in a multi-billion dollar organization.
Furthermore, Vlad details the all-in factor that comes with gambling as opposed to the flexibility involved with investments, in addition to the concept of time which can be your best friend when buying and selling stocks. "Unlike betting when you have pre-set rules on how much money you'll make," Vlad explains, "the upside from stocks is unlimited." To emphasize this point, Vlad notes that if you bought $1,000 of Amazon stock when they went public in 1997, then that $1,000 investment would be worth $730,000 today.
With that said, other companies like RadioShack, Blackberry, and Kodak would have likely lost all of your money if you stayed invested over time, while choosing which company to invest in is ultimately up to you. Vlad stresses the point that every public company is required to disclose all of their financials every three months, with data that is almost always 100% accurate.
