He hit the breaks. Ridiculous. A single man wall like this will break against a man his size. Unless the defenders have proper stance. Left foot forward. Right foot back. Ad a second line of infantry holding there shields agains the back of the first guys. Or even guys with single handed spears. I’m hand on the guy infront to steady him up. And the king reach of a spear to stab from behind.

That isn't him weakening the charge much, that is more him bracing for impact. He is about to ram into people braced against him, which mechanically stronger.

Thats why battle are often loss when the flanks fall.
