Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world
Unprecedented floods have been ongoing in Spain since the end of October. The natural disaster caused by Cyclone Dana (an isolated high-level depression) has led to severe flooding. During the duration of this weather phenomenon, severe flooding occurred in Valencia, Catalonia and Malaga.
In the autonomous community of Valencia in eastern Spain, flooding occurred on October 29 due to heavy rains. In eight hours, the region received a year's worth of rainfall. Due to the floods in Valencia, trains to Madrid and Barcelona stopped running, air travel was disrupted, schools and basic social services were closed, and many homes were left without electricity.
Before the Spaniards had time to recover from the devastating flooding in Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha and eastern Andalusia, the Spanish meteorological service declared a "red" alert in Catalonia. Storm Dana hit Barcelona, Tarragona, and Penedès. Cars were floating in the streets of Tarragona province, while water flooded El Prat airport in Barcelona. Residents were issued warnings of a “serious threat” and were urged to remain vigilant and not to travel.
The latest major blow from Storm Dana hit the province of Malaga. Spanish authorities sent out a warning of a “high risk of heavy rainfall” to phones in the province of Malaga on Tuesday, November 12, after 10:00 pm local time. Then, heavy rains caused flash flooding in the Spanish city of Malaga on Wednesday. After intense rainfall, the local Guadalmedina river burst its banks. Streams of water rushed through the streets, washing away motorbikes and cars.
To summarize, this is the largest flood-related disaster in Spain. This natural event surpassed the disaster of 1996, when massive floods occurred near the town of Biesca in the Pyrenees.
