Thank you for these tips.I bought a used violin recently, and have been making some progress. It came with a sponge for a shoulder rest, which I used at the beginning but disliked. So now I use nothing. Is that a reasonable option, or does it limit me in ways of which I am yet unaware?

I’d like to try the shoulder rest your using. What brand is it? I’m struggling with a standard KUN now and having issues

Very nice advice! I’m not a fiddler, but teach orchestra and love to get other’s takes on important things for beginners.

The mute is indeed a great thing. I just got one and the difference in volume is amazing. With it I'm at once at "room volume", which does of course have the drawback that my neighbours won't be able to enjoy my practicing any longer...

I once had an orchestral mute but it left me in my various travels. These days I practice on an cheap electric fiddle without plugging it in to anything. It is CRAZY heavy due to the full body but I think\know that helps me when I pickup my playing instrument. My mind tells me something about 'Weight and finger agility' and I hear that but I tell my mind to shut up. LOL I'll figure it out...again.

I like the idea of the bow hold jig. IVE NEVER OWNED ONE BUT WOULD CONSIDER ONE IF NEED BE. THE BEST THING IS HAVE A LITTLE SPACE BETWEEN EACH BOW FINGER.

One more tip I would add, tune each time before you play. If you get out of the habit of tuning and your strings are off, you'll be in such a confused way not knowing what you're doing wrong.
