I love the smell of diesel when I fuel up the van. EVs just don’t have that charm.

Turn off 5G, it’s garbage as right now it’s mostly not really 5G at all and thus often really slow and patchy. Don’t use O2 ever.

Yes chaps, Ive been upgrading the Vodafone and sky network the past 2 years. All Hawaii kit is being ripped out so they can have a poke at the Chinese. Also the whole network is being fcuked with everyday at the moment with the drive to turn the whole country fibre.

Phone signal is bad! Drives me insane m6 between Birmingham and Coventry drops out every time. Apparently it’s since they went to Voice IP a few years ago data drops for a few seconds and doesn’t reroute quick enough between towers. You will notice your signal go to zero for a few seconds then back to full signal.

GSM and 4G is patchy in Watford. O2 say they are improving the network with 5G. I think they need to install a lot more cell towers/antennas as 5G has more speed but less range. They probably also need to look at the backhaul connections from tower to local exchange.

Small domestic firms won't have the commercial partnerships with the car dealerships which is where the bulk of the EV installs come from. These type of jobs have set prices for "basic" install. This is an IP65 DB with RCBO and SPD next to the DB, 10-15m of EV ultra clipped direct to the charger location. It's all compliant and avoids getting involved too much with the existing installation. Obviously supply and bonding needs to be up to scratch.
Sometimes it would be better to advise the customer to have a full EICR and Main fuseboard upgrade but then you'd be turning work away because commercial EV installers don't want to get involved in further works in the house and the car dealership doesn't want the customer to reconsider the idea of buying a new EV.
Try telling a customer with a 3 year old new build they need a £1500 fuseboard change on top of the EV job.

I have an EV purely to save money. Even though it's expensive to buy (I'm leasing) over the 3 years we'll have it, it'll save me thousands in tax and running costs.

Solar car parks... Look at motorway services in Italy. They have panels which run the services and shade the cars - but not charge them yet....
However, they are moving towards panels and self sufficiency at all service stations... BUT, they have loads of sun! It will work for them, but less efficient here - the further north you get, the less useful.
Their panels also track the sun for most efficiency.

Regarding Phone Reception, remember placement is everything especialy in a car, a car is basical a faraday cage so if you have a phone below the window line its shelded from the 3G/4G/5G signal.

Also don't forget, a lot of people don't charge their EVs every night. We charge ours usually once a week. 220+ miles range which would take us a week to get through most of the time. The average commute is something like 8.5 miles per day, so there's just no need to be charging all the time.

Far to long we’ve relied on Chinese stuff and now the powers that be have realised all is not sweet and innocent with the things, now we’re heading for our arse, could it be part of a greater plan???

GSM mast technology is now prioritising data, the RF spectrum is subject to interference with more equipment being added there is more interference. Data streams can handle it, but live voip can not so well

😆 love seeing Sam get animated when telling people their not an Engineer! He is right tho, if you agree that your not an electrician without a gold card then how can you accept people just calling themselves engineers without a degree in engineering.

New regulations for smart EVs means the electricity supply companies and the government have means of automatically pausing your car charging over night to help balance the grid.

Is the cost of charging an EV cheaper than a petrol or diesel car/van? With the increased cost of electricity you're almost at the same price for a normal tank of fuel but get half the mileage.

Am finally catching up on this video. While the population density is so high in the UK I still find it amazing that the motorway coverage sounds like shite. Our coverage in Australia on motorways between cities sounds like it craps all over yours. Our problem is indoor coverage has worsened as the technology changes.

I gather that there are some places where EVs have to all have two way systems to be able to supply to house or even grid with smart grid control. In Aus about 2/3 of domestic houses have panels. A 9kW system with installation costs between $9k to $14k for a quality system. . It seems UK solar costs are significantly higher. I guess it's our location with the sun and being close to Asia. In South Australia there are some days when the rooftop solar has supplied the entire grid and the energy authorities have had to raise the voltage to 260v to force systems to shut down. The current thing here (pun intended) is upgrading of older systems and batteries, if any stocks are available. All very interesting.

Fires in solar systems have been an increasing problem with cowboy installers and dodgy DC isolators. The use of microinverters and solar optimisers should make quite a difference

On a serious note there are significant issues if an EV catches fire. In car parks or blocks of flats sprinkler systems can't control the fires. Grid issues are bad enough for a single house, try an apartment block with hundreds of parking spots.

Really refreshing to hear Sam oval talking about that we are only trained to be electricians. That is something that I can honestly relate to. But the price is the price and never bow down on prices.
