In early March 2020, before the pandemic shut down the world, we traveled to Japan for the first time together for an early anniversary celebration.
In Kyoto, we stayed one night at The Machiya Shinsen-En (found on Booking.com) :

The Machiya Shiensen-En is a 4 star hotel well situated in the Nakagyo Ward district. It is a very calm district with many public transports around, which allow you to go around the city very conveniently.
The hotel is nicely decorated with a well balanced mix of new and old, and an accent on wood and stone materials with earthy tones. The room itself is painted with a terracotta color which gives a warm feeling when you come in, especially when it's cold outside.
Reception is open 24 hours a day with some of the kindest staff.
Check-in is from 3p.m and check-out is until 11 a.m. Both check-in and check out can be accommodated according to the guests needs.
As of March 2020, we paid 9,600 Yen for one night (approximatively 90 USD), for two people in their Deluxe Suite.
The hotel itself doesn't have a gym nor a pool, but they have a lovely lobby and dinning room with chairs and tables, but also a tatami corner where you can have your breakfast. We didn't pay for the breakfast service but according to the comments on Booking it is delicious and completely worth it.
The Machiya Shiensen-En provides a traditional tea set for each room, as well as a yukata for each guest. More usual amenities include a mini bar, a safe, a TV, AC and heater, towels, a bathroom with the Japanese bathtub, a separate room with Japanese toilets.
Toiletries provided include a shower gel, shampoo, conditionner, body lotion, soaps, 2 toothbrushes with toothpastes, a vanity set, shower caps and a natural lofa.
