I'm 40 and my wife and I were thinking about moving there in 10 years. We currently have a networth of 1 million USD. However lately we've been talking about moving in the next 5 years. We have a high income and incredibly low cost of living in Florida, so the thought of leaving that is where the fear comes from. We love Thailand and will be visiting in November. While there, we are going to visit a former coworker who is now an expat. Perhaps the visit will help with the fear. Your videos are helping for sure. Keep up the good work 😀

There aren’t many people that have the same mindset than us. In fact as you know, we are in the minority. My aim in life was always to retire as early as possible and i knew i was on course in my early thirties that it was achievable by 40 and it was. I have a nice lifestyle here at between 1500-2000 a month and i am also saving as much on top each month on property investments in the uk

People should listen to what you say but many like you say, have something that prevents them taking the steps and just spend most of their life going in circles

Read The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel. He addresses this issue and many others on a non-math based field. He looks at thing through they way money teaches you about what's really important, how to stop moving the goal posts, what really defines "enough" and how to make sense of life priorities.

I used to be the scared of travelling alone guy. I did it once and then realized that travelling alone is better. I get to choose where to go, when to go, and what to do. I don't have to coordinate with other people who may have different plans. Solo travel is the way to go for sure.

I understand someone less than 30 I need to learn more but I am glad I am doing way better then most people my age. Luckily I always was very good at making money and being entrepreneurial.

I have had friends killed, or overdosed at the age of 19, 22, 23, 25, and even 14. And I am already going through a midlife crisis being less than 30.

Moving to Thailand has saved my life whether it was a life of early death or the bad drudgery I would have had to deal with in the United States.

I generally agree, but there are other ways. By age 20, I made a decision that I wasn't going to marry my high school sweetheart, have kids, drive a Ford Pinto, and be in debt and trapped in a small town...I had wandering eyes (exotic countries). So post university, I got a job with a US multinational. In 5 years, I was traveling all over S America and NE & SE Asia, 50% of my time, company paid. After another 5 years, my overseas postings began (I was cheap in my company's eyes, I didn't have the baggage of a family) with paid housing, home leaves, medical and schooling (after another 15 years, married to Asian wife and kids of school age). THIS IS THE WAY TO DO IT, AND BETTER WHEN YOUNG. Yes, times are different, and the overseas assignments are severely limited (locals are just as capable as professional Western expats these days). By the time one reaches 50/60 and decides for the foreign life for the first time, sorry, but you missed the boat. While moving overseas can offer a cheaper/better life, there are risks (e.g. the USD has depreciated 10% against the Baht this year, so what used to cost $4000/mo now costs $4400/mo). As time goes by in exotic low cost countries, the cost of living increases as they develop, and from influx of too many foreign dreamers, and the "exotic" is no more. To me it's sad (off setting) seeing so many lonely old men roaming in places like Thailand, most who look lost (and one will never be part of Asian society...I think it was easier 50 years ago). Most thinking of moving to Thailand these days seem to be either running from a failed social/family life or out of economic necessity, and not a happy bunch (didn't have a plan/think things through). Those well traveled and with sufficient funds will do OK/be happy, and they'll have a plan B when things go upside down. Life is a mix of trade-offs, and that mix is different for everyone. In my case, I know what life and partying was like in Manila, Jakarta, Bangkok, Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore, Rio, Caracas, Bombay, etc. in the 80s/90s, when in my 30s, but now too old for those wild times (and the fun factor is 50% of what it was in these cities). But, I am still drawn back to Thailand and frequently visit.

The fact is, if you are just getting by on a tight budget in the West, the same income will give you a comfortable lifestyle here in Thailand. It's a win win

when I was 54 I told my financial advisor that I was quitting my job and retiring.

He told me that I "needed" $10,000 USD per month.

I told him that I could do it easily in Thailand on $3,000 USD per month. He didn't get it.

Well, 2 years later I'm still in Thailand and kind of sticking to a budget. 😊

Your only mistake was saying you need a few thousand dollars a month to retire in Thailand for a middle class lifestyle 😂 but I think I know what you meant (a couple thousand a month is perfectly sufficient, even in the capital, 3 or 4 or a few or anything more than that is just luxury)

Moving is complex. First, you need to rent+cheaper in Thailand) but in the first 6 months you are going to need a car. Next, you will need some tools...and soon you will be recreating what you left behind. Finally, how does a foreigner meet Thailand's tax rules if you end up staying more than 6 months per year? The way I see it is retiring abroad means creating a parallel setup elsewhere and needs more money.

They always name the pilots that have passed with their age. It is amazing and a good wake up call to see that many die between 62 to 67, pretty sad. I really like your videos. I like the conservative point of view regarding budget and what not. It would be great if you deep dived more into banking there, moving money, investing, and so on. Lots of videos of young guys on here just don't give proper advice on these things. I'm planning retirement there, and hunting for valuable info. Thanks!

Retired age 49 to 54. Returned to teaching university 18 hours a week by age 55. Preferred making 6k spending 2k teaching 3 or 4 hours a day was better than spending 1000 drinking.
