D-Day landing
"Name, age, location" sold and delivered meat to restaurants and grocery stores: Private 1st class, Army. 3205th Quartermaster Service, under the command of the 6th Engineer Special Combat Brigade. Served in England for six months and in France for 19 months. Landed on Omaha Beach on June 6th, 1944, at 4 p.m.
"The water was red from blood. All I saw were dead bodies. I don't know what I thought. ... My clothing stunk from the blood."
"They told us to pick up bodies. ... All they wanted seen were dead Germans. They didn't want the new troops landing to see dead Americans."

A quote from my great uncle from a local newspaper. He was in the 3rd wave on Omaha beach.

They walk head on collision but could have minimize the casualty if they gathered info and prepare throughly

I’m so truly fascinated by this whole operation. I’ve been lucky enough to see Omaha beach in its modern state. And the magnitude is overwhelming. I honestly can’t understand how they coordinate all. Try getting like 4 of your friends together for dinner that can be a challenge!

A little known fact of D-Day: 30 Sherman tanks tried to float to the beach wearing inflatable buoys. 29 of those tanks sank in the English Channel drowning the 5 man crews (145 men). Only one tank made the beach. If those tanks had not sank then Allied casualties would have been cut in half or even more.

Blame the senior commanders.
Omaha and Gold both faced 352nd.
The terrain was similar for both.
We offered you Hobart's Funnies but you rejected them. We used them.
You launched your swimming tanks too far out to sea into choppy waters.
We launched ours further inshore.
Of your 29 tanks only two made it.
Of our 34 tanks, 33 made it
Our casualties on Gold were relatively low and we were off the beach quite early More Americans were actually killed in England in South Devon at Slapton in the preparation exercises (Exercise Tiger) for DDay than the figure of 683 reported as KIA at Omaha on DDay itself. That in itself is staggeringly tragic.

80 years ago. Most men that stormed the beach would be 100+ today. Soon there will be no more WW2 survivors 😔 We are losing the greatest generation.

The reason the Allies won this battle is because technology evolutionised.

In WW1 until the Spring Offensive, the reason the allies struggled to defeat to the Germans was because technology such as tanks & aircraft were only just born & other weapons like poison gas & flamethrowers were also & soldiers had no idea how to deal with it.

By WW2 the weapons especially tanks & planes greatly improved over the two decades between both World Wars.

As a result the likes of trench warfare that was infamous on the western front in WW1 was a thing of the past.

While obviously trenches did exist they were only used to protect soldiers not to live in, in contrast to WW1. It was mostly mobile warfare.

My grandmother was a nurse during the time of the war, and the injuries she saw American and British soldiers suffering from were devastating. Remember D-Day.

My great grandma’s brother was shipped to Omaha and he got shot while trying to go more up to the seawall. My great grandma felt terrible knowing her brother was gone. But today I also feel terrible because she is very old and thinks her brother is still alive while calling out for him.

My great-grandfather was in one of those MG nests, aging 17 to that day. He said it was like a horrible nightmare seeing this wave of "ammis" mindlessly running towards them like a swarm. He felt nothing but fear, heard no sound anymore, saw nothing anymore but the blood red sea and thousands of 'dots' running right at them. Were would the americans go otherwise. Swim back? He managed to flee with 2 of his comrades. It was either getting hanged as cowards by fellow german soldiers or get shot by heartless americans. A while after the battle they capitulated to a small 5 men group. His comrade managed to communicate, saying they were forced to fight. Years later my grandpa and the american that pow'd them met once at the beach again and talked again as sort of friends. Even the most horrible day cant destroy humanity. I salute to all germans who survived that terrible war. No one was asked

So, from what I understand, it sounds like the bunkers and other strong points got neutralized because of naval bombardment, tanks bombardment, and the fact THEY RAN OUT OF AMMO!!. Somebody screwed up big time here.
