From Emmy Award winning PBS series Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop (Program 104, Season One)(English Subtitles) (New Upload with Credits that had been deleted)
David visits Pierre Auguste Renoir’s (1841-1919) home and studio in Les Colettes in the South of France, and takes us through the ancient olive grove overlooking Nice and the Mediterranean. David traces Renoir’s difficult but ultimately successful quest for transmuting clean and strong color into soft and suggestive shapes. David sets his easel precisely where Renoir set his and loosely demonstrates Renoir’s methods and techniques in his landscape paintings, describing their effects and explaining his thoughts. These programs are not intended to copy Renoir's style and painting but to explore with the viewer the philosophy and technique of Renoir. David then works with his talented fellow artist Max Dunlop (and also his son!) as they discuss Max's oil sketch of a different view at Renoir's Les Colettes. Max gave his consent to David for the discussion about his painting and also for David's comments in paint on the actual painting. We hope that you enjoy the South of France!
