From what I understand, lawyers let their clients testify by narrative is because they know the client is going to spin some bullshit, and the lawyer wants nothing to do with it and the client is insisting on taking the stand. Lawyers can get into ethics trouble if they knowingly ask a question their client (or the person on the stand, in general) is going to lie in answer on direct examination. Cross-examination rules are different, since you didn't call the witness being questioned.
