How to Test a Spark Plug In One Minute

I just get a reading of 1. This does not change when I put the leads on any plug.

Great video for ruling out the plug itself ..... Although your multimeter leads are insert wrongly lol..... Black goes into the COM port ..... But in a resistance or continuity test it doesnt matter..... But in a current test it does

I have a 2011 Ford fusion and all 4 spark plugs are reading between 4.3 and 4.5 ohms.

Is this acceptable?

I tested a plug without a resistor at 20k. It read 0, not 1-15. What would that mean?

This was a waste of time over 99.9% of the time the problem is black carbon on the white porcelain, with that problem the spark just jumps across on the black carbon.

You cannot test spark plugs with a DMM and get some resistance, 0 if no built in resistor for EMI suppression or the built in resistor reading and say it's good or not for definite. Spark plugs dowse of under compression if they're no good. Ever heard a case where when you test spark plug out of the engine it gives off spark but in the cylinder it fails to ignite.

Technically you're checking for continuity, which is a connection. We only want a connection between the terminal on the end, and the center electrode. The quality or resistance of that connection is measured in ohms. A poor connection has high resistance. A good connection has very little, or no resistance. When you touch the probes of your multimeter together and it shows zero on the display it's because there is no resistance between the probes, and you have an excellent connection (good continuity).

I have 4 push on spark plug clear plastic adaptors.i just look to see the spark is same on ticking over in each adaptor.

You'd find whiners and fault-finders everywhere, including here of course. They tend to be losers in life who need to do this, for a quick albeit temporary fix. Like a junkie...to try convince themselves that they are somehow 'better'. Which is fantasy. Unless if they can produce better videos... which they can't 😅

It does not have a 6 Ohm reading , it is 6 K Ohms or 6 thousand Ohms. You know that but stated differently, that would confuse the uninitiated.

I just tried this test on a brand new plug and dont get a reading. Could I have a bad meter?

and a new one is usually good, but every so often a new one can be bad.

You also need to check the resistant between the electrode to ground of the spark plug,If it appear some resistant it will reduce the strengh of the Spark(ark).It still cause some light missfire.

Sorry. You made two major errors. One was being 1000 ohms off several times, which you corrected once in the voice over. The other was referring to the broken plug as having no resistance. No resistance would be indicated by 0. Your meter showed no conductivity, the opposite of no resistance.

Good vid but for those without a multimeter and/or don't have a full minute; leave plug connected to ignition coil, put switch in the on position and if possible, secure equipment (in my case, a chainsaw) in a vice. Then with one hand, hold the spark plug tightly while swiftly pulling starter rope with the other. If you scream loudly like a little girl, you almost surely have a good ignition coil as well as a good spark plug. Completed test in well under a minute but you may need additional time to go to the rest room to clean the mess. lmao

How about for scooter

Working of a Spark Plug in a running engine is fairly complex. It has to generate spark while withstanding wide fluctuations of temperature and pressure. It also has to have self cleaning properties by running at optimum temperature to ensure burning of soot around the tip while avoiding a red hot tip which can ignite fuel without a spark.
The resistance test explained in the video is a preliminary test. If it fails, we can take the plug as bad. If it passes, it is no guarantee that the plug is indeed good.

Hey, I am using 20k settjng and getting 5,35, 4,94, 4,78 and 4,64. All the same brand, has R on it. I am wonder if these readings below 5 may impact fuel economy in any way? No resistance anywhere else besides the tip.
