Quality over quantity. The last Sino-Japan war with major naval battles was 1894-1895.

You may have forgotten that before World War II, Germany and China were close allies, not Japan, and the world has changed more than you can imagine. Perhaps Japan is just pretending to see China as an enemy in order to develop military capabilities under the nose of the United States, as Japan did during World War II before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Th bigger issue for China is they’ve ticked off everyone else on the South China Sea. So they likely have to deal with multiple countries if a major conflict breaks out.

Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, the US, South Korea, and possibly even Vietnam.

It's true that China can produce a vast number of ships in a hurry but it's harder to manufacture experienced and skilled sailors and naval officers and aviators. That takes years. Naval tradition and institutional memory is still a very real phenomenon.

AUKUS could become JAUKUS. In the context of the AUKUS or eventually the JAUKUS, the United Kingdom must double the strength of its SSNs, going from 6 to 12 SSNs... At least. ...Although the ideal would be 14. With Japan like Australia, contributing with 8 SSN; ... At least.

Japan's land area is too small, its population base is much smaller than China's, and its natural resources are scarce. Moreover, the achievements of the Meiji Restoration have been slowly overtaken by China's reform and opening up (during the Second World War in the last century, China did not implement reform and opening up, and Japan could easily defeat any Asian country and dominate the entire Asia). Now without the help of the United States, it is definitely not a match for China.

It's worth noting that China has the worlds largest merchant navy. It's naive to expect that all those ships won't partake and when combined with PLAN, which is also the largest by number you got a pretty overwhelming force.. Size not being so much of an issue when the battlefield is right next door.

here's the thing It doesn't have to just think for a second every country that is considered a challenge to other countries will stand alone as in the end they are friendless when they can't buy influence and all those countries that they potentially threaten have many friends who will rush to their defense being force multipliers

china is no match for Japan. china in the past and present is very weak militarily - such as in order to disguise their weakness agreed with India not to use weapons in their border struggles - use sticks and stones. Vietnam knows how weak china is. Besides china is not a maritime nation. Was no match in sino Japanese war of 1894. Was no match in WW2 against Japan - even with help from the anglo saxon nations. china is a coward proven over and over.

The only reason JSMDF still dont double its surface warfare ships is because of the article 9. Once its done being a pacifist and no longer rely on the US for security it will be a force to reckon with since it has better ship building facilities than the US and it can produce high tech weapon systems. A militarized japan is a big headache for the CCP.

Short answer? No.

Long answer. No, they can't

Remember this is China vs Japan alone. Not china vs Japan, USA, SK, and the rest of the g7 and NATO etc. otherwise why mention Japan and just say USA and west vs China.

Japan surrendered after 2 nukes only, and couldn't defeat China even when it was fighting a civil war and at its weakest point in history after dynastic collapse and 100+ years of humiliation and weakness.

Japan surrendered to USA, while 5 years later China deliberately declared war vs USA, SK and 17 other UN countries combined during Korean war in 1950. And china managed to defeat usa and push them all below the 38th parallel, the exact spot that China told USA to not cross otherwise they will enter the war. So China achieved her military objectives. Saving nk and pushing usa and UN below 38th.

Remember, this was a china in crippling poverty with zero technology, Zero nukes. Yet they still called USAs bluff and attacked them and the whole world even when USA nuked Japan just 5 years earlier.

Only China has directly made the decision to engage in direct total war vs a nuclear superpower(even if it was a proxy war in Korea, but USA had bombed Chinese cities on the border and if China didn't enter the war, USA would be invading China next just like Japan did)..

No one else has the balls nor the ability to "win" such a war in all of human history, and since then China has turned into a peer superpower of USA in less than one full generation(75 years only).

Unless Japan is a peer of USA and can also defeat USA, asking if Japan can defeat China is just a silly joke.

Never underestimate Japanese Coast Guard fleet. The total assets still circulating 500+ ships. 30+ ships 5000~20000 GRT and can carry one or two helicopter each... Another 30+ are GRT 3000~5000 range, and the rest 2000, 1000, 500, 100 GRTs and small boats... All can transform into any suitable battleships, so-called ; frigates or corvettes or minesweepers or whatever and ready for combat within 24 hrs .... A brand-new one 30000 GRT flagship is under way, willing to launch in mids 2029. Japs absolutely know the difference between Quality and Quantity, and never showed their hidden claws !!!

( Don't be forget Yokosuka based the mighty USN Seventh Fleet, and all 299 US installations in Japan 😂)

Japan building their own nuclear arsenal is still not out of the question. The thing is Japan could easily build them and China knows it (even without the help from US). The two Asian giants have fought wars over the centuries over land. China knows it's not the only one with capability tech know how. Japan has also pionereed the world's first commisioned aircraft carrier used during WW2 and has decades of experience well before China's first aircraft carrier bought from Russia.
