Bulbs are the best way to get color from spring plants. Plant these bulbs in the fall for great blooms in the spring -- tulip, allium, hyacinth, crocus, daffodil, and grape hyacinth. At its most basic, planting a bulb consists of digging a hole, placing the bulb in the hole with pointy side up, and then burying and watering the bulb. An efficient way to plant a cluster or a formal design is to till the entire area to be planted, lay out the bulbs on the dirt in the desired pattern, and dig them in where they sit. Planting single bulbs among perennials, an auger will help get into tight spaces. Plant naturalizing bulbs where they will get plenty of sun -- that way they'll return stronger each spring.
