Without doubt one of the best sci-fi movies of the 50s!
Even before the spectacular arrival an interesting story is beginning to unfold, and the film could have just continued as a man-on-the-run movie, but the ET theme cleverly raises the interest far above the initial drama. The craft is brilliantly designed with its stabilising gyroscopic ring, and its size is conveyed effectively when figures are seen on the access ramp. The final scene of the craft is astonishing considering the special effects available at the time. The key to enjoying this marvellous film is to disregard everything you now know about science fiction and view it as audiences at the time saw it. An outstanding film which deserved a better title.

It’s clear that in this film and in
FLIGHT TO MARS, 1951 and
BEYOND THE TIME BARRIER, 1960
that the aliens were surreptitiously hinting at something important which the human race had to do, and it was not until the late 60s that we finally understood what they had been repeatedly hinting at - we had to invent the mini skirt!

I wonder if you could put some of these old black and white movies through an AI filter to colour them. That would be a fascinating experiment.

An interesting approach: the Martian is acting as a complement to the plot. Almost a love story, really.

A devil woman all dressed in leather like a space dominatrix arrives on Earth to say Mars Needs Men. She should have met those misfit martians from Mars Needs Women and the shortage of both genders on the red planet would have been resolved.

This is the first time I have seen John Laurie outside of Dads Army.

A Camp Cult Classic starring an imperious and statuesque Patricia Laffan as Martian space dominatrix ‘Nyah,’ dressed from head to toe in shiny black PVC, and with nylon clad legs that seemingly go on forever! ❤💋

In Sci-Fi films of the ‘40’s and ‘50’s alien invaders often had a robot helper along for the ride. In the best of its kind, “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” ‘Klaatu’ is accompanied by the imposing ‘Gort,’ who while recognisably a “man-in-a-suit,” is far more impressive than the laughably inept ‘Johnny(!),’ a fridge-on-legs, who accompanies Nyah.

The script and supporting performances are just what you would expect from a film called “Devil Girl from Mars,” although the first appearance of Nyah at the 24min mark is very nicely done, and the interior of her ship with its impressively minimalistic lighting scheme is reminiscent of the saucer from TDtESS.

But let’s face it, the only reason to watch this is to see Nyah swishing around in all her shiny black-clad glory, sneering, with the occasional Spock-like raised eyebrow, at the ignorantly primitive humans as she repeatedly threatens death and destruction for everyone in the room… all the while secretly wishing you could accompany her back to Mars! ❤🙂

I’ll admit to not being a fan of colourised films, and this effort does nothing to change my mind, however the original B&W version is here on YT for those who want to contrast and compare.
