Monstrous flood washes Italy into the sea

Heavy rains hit Italy, causing monstrous floods and landslides in Sicily.
A cyclonic vortex located over the Tyrrhenian Sea has caused severe instability in Sicily, where heavy rains and severe flooding have begun. In the first seven hours, 500 millimeters of rain fell, or 500 liters of water per square meter. The situation is worst on the east coast of Sicily, in the Giarre and Riposto areas, where authorities have declared a red weather alert. Rivers began to overflow their banks, flooding houses and streets, and streams of water washed parked cars into the sea.
The disaster took local residents by surprise, some of whom were trapped in cars and buildings and were forced to wait for rescuers. Water penetrated houses, flooded basements and first floors of buildings, and even poured out of fireplaces. In Aci Sant'Antonio, residents were trapped in a flooded supermarket, while in Acireale, a wall collapsed in a house, but fortunately no one was hurt. In the La Timpa nature reserve, a landslide blocked the road to the village of Santa Tecla. In Altarello, residents on the ground floor of a house were trapped and an amphibious fire engine was used to rescue them. Alessandro Arico, the Sicily Region's councilor for infrastructure and mobility, called for caution and recommended "leaving home only if necessary." Some local schools have temporarily suspended classes, and offices and official institutions have been closed. Locals are sharing footage of the devastating floods on social media.
The elements have now calmed down and the storm has moved out to sea.
