less ventilation and more aero helment is all very weel, but how much could you loose by overheating on a long hot climb?

extra weight might slow you a little going uphill due to the gravitational pull, but that gravity gives you more power on the downhill partly making up for the time loss.

If you are riding behind other riders, the benefits are less beneficial. You can save a lot ef energy by soft pedaling whenever possible.

The sock theory proves that hairy legs are indeed faster. Stop leg shaving.

Another point watt counters fail to realize is that if everyone is doing the same thing it becomes a moot point. If everyone uses the lower drag socks, perfect positions, the best aero parts, then you end up with the same benefits as the competion.

So it really boils down to who is stronger and a better and more efficient cyclist. Look at Japanese keirin. Men use un aero bikes, oversized helmets, pedals with more drag, and non aero wheels. Guess what they still race and the best racer wins.

All the tricks to lower drag only work if you can do it better than the competition. This contributes to the cheater mentally, like doping, that is prevelent in cycling.

Rock Bar cycling sells a case with weight that is narrow enough to have minimal drag. Having tried it, weight does matter until body gets stronger and adapts to the weight. That is why aero has a big advantage over weight. The more aero you are, the less effort you have to do relative to being less aero. Also, wind drag increases exponentially as speed increases. Weight drag does not change effort as speed increases unless going downhill.

if higher socks are aerodynamic, does that mean that long sleeves and full leg pieces are even more aerodynamic?

Power³ = speed, in a medium that is: drag = speed² It takes 1.73x as much aero power to go 18 as it does to go 15

many years ago when British cycling were getting increased funding and using the some of the first in depth wind tunnel testing, I remember Chris Boardman remarking that after extended use of the wind tunnel they had come out with more questions than they had gone in with. In fact people quite happy to adopt aero socks nearly up to there knees. but the federations dont seem keen to adopt the wide clearances around the track frames that British cycling have. So does this mean that there is no difference between wide and narrow clearances on frames ?

I think the socks thing has gone way too far. The reason socks were short was because the veins of the legs and ankles are close to the skin. This enables heat to be lost in warm/hot conditions. Long socks in the heat is nuts. Seeing riders carrying ice packs with long socks on alpine climbs is daft. Remco has found his skin is more aero than material now :p There's so much nonsense.

I'm always fascinated by cyclist-types resenting change on grounds of "looking silly"... For pete's sake, we look like transgender ballerinas to begin with and are the world's laughing stock when it comes to aesthetics,. Knee-high socks are gonna ruin our swagger now? Jesus, let's get real.

UCI:
- Ban dangerour positions to ensure riders are safe
- Set minimum weight to ensure riders aren't paying fortunes for increasingly marginal gains or sacrificing comfort for minisule weight savings.
- Set maximum sock leght to protect riders from looking silly.

If aerogloves save some Watts, why are the pros not wearing them during ITTs?
For example I just watched the one at the Dauphine and Remco wasn't wearing any gloves

I recently bought a '06 trek 1500 wsd, IDC if it's womens the colors amazing and it fits surprisingly well for me being 6'2. I ride about 6 miles everyday to and from work and on my ride home it's usually very late at night, where there isn't much traffic, giving me the option for a time trial. When I first got the bike I was doing about 20 minutes racing back. Ive known aerodynamics for a long time but I finally thought I'd start trying the positions, being my first road bike from xc/hybrid bikes I tried it, and raced a sub 15 minute run hitting 35 and avg of 20. After I set that new pb I've been using aero tucks and stuff a lot more even on casual rides. And bare in mind I got that bike for a deal of $200 and ride flats, a shirt, shorts and backpack, the difference it's gonna make when I upgrade to cycling kit...

Great video and the marginal gains from doing X and Y will obviously add up but if one has to regularly ride at 30 mph on the flat to see these gains, then the vast majority of cyclists are not going to hit these speeds. Downhill - sure but on the flat, unlikely.

It's always disappointing when you see these massive savings at 40+ km/h, and then you realise that that 5.3 watt savings from aero socks becomes 1.9 watts at the 32 km/h a recreational rider like me rides at.
