This ended Dukakis' political career & caused him NOT to seek reelection to 4th term as MA Governor in 1990.

So many people gloss over the debate question the sunk Dukakis as being inappropriate or don’t go into why his answer was so bad. In addition to not being very emotional, he spent most of his time talking about the his views on the ineffectiveness on the war on drugs. He didn’t just give a sterile answer, he gave a sterile non-answer that did him in.

This was the first election I voted in. Gary Hart was the leading democrat candidate. And being from Colorado myself I was excited about his prospects until he was shot down.
I also remember the crushes I had on Donna Rice and Fawn Hall, who were in the news a lot in 87-88.

I know most people are talking about Joe Biden being in this election, but apparently Donald Trump of all people had actually talked with Lee Atwater to become George Bush’s running mate, however when Atwater had told Bush about this meeting Bush had denied Trump’s Request saying it was “strange and unbelievable”

Dukakis is a descendant of the Doukas imperial family of the Byzantine Empire, meaning we almost had a roman emperor's great great etc grandson for president

this is the first presidential election i really remember paying much attention to in 88. i was 8 in 84 and knew some what was going on but 88 had several advantages to me. one i was starting to be more of a history nut, so figured presidential elections were important to history (though i didn't realize how often some of those if they'd turned out differently, we'd be in a much different world, ie 1860, 1864, 1916, 1940, among examples). the other main reason (i think) was the fact that at least in theory it was wide open since regan couldn't run again. i mean i think in the back of my mind i knew it was bush's to lose, but i thought it'd be interesting to see how the process worked with no incumbent. i've saw recently ona show about dukakis, that he claims he came with in like 1/4 of a million votes of winning in the electoral college. i dont' remember any states being that close but we all know you don't have to win even half the states to win (ie 76), u just have to win the right ones, so i guess it's possible. anyways, i wonder looking at this, 84, 72, and 1816, 1872, even the very first two elections to a certain extent, whether parties went "we've got to nominate someone, we won't be taken seriously ever again if we don't", and just offered up a sacrificial lamb. if dukakis claim about the 88 election is true, maybe not so much, but it was still pretty lopsided. if he'd of not said flat out no i wouldnt support the death penalty if my wife was murdered, he probably had a better chance. though others think that the guy from massechusets that killed someone while out on "leavce" from prison was more the issue i don't think either helped. i've read up on dukakis after seeing that show. i still dont' think i'd ever have voted for him if i'd of been of age, but unlike most candidates i'd say that about (or forthat matter most of the rest other than carter i'd not voted for), i can honestly say if i met him, i might like him. he seemed like a guy that was in over his head, but if you met on the street, at the store, at a college, at church, yeah i could maybe be friends with. not that that would ever happen but yeah i could say i respect him as a person
