Performed by Arcenio Advincula at Ken Richardson's Tyler, Texas dojo (April 1987)
Shimabuku Tatsuo traditionally taught this as the 3rd karate kata in Isshin-ryū Karate syllabus.
Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei said Naihanchi kata from Shorin-ryū karate is the mother of Isshin-ryū karate and Sanchin kata from Goju-ryū karate is the father of Isshin-ryū karate. The enbusen for Naihanchi kata is in a horizontal straight line going left then right ( - - ), where Sanchin kata enbusen goes straight forward then back ( | ). The two enbusen together show the union between the two ( -|- ).
Naihanchi kata emphasizes gamaku (ガマク) or waist which is soft, and Sanchin emphasizes chinkuchi (チンクチ) which is hard.
