My bubba from kiyev ukraine who immigrated to USA in the 1900s always made shakshuka, stuffed grape leaves (but she used kasha instead of rice), and some kind of stuffed kinish but it was more mediterranean than the traditional eastern European style... I always figured it was just good traditional food and never thought that it was old Mediterranean recipes which her mother or grandmother had which the people in the shtetle had been passing down... I know that many of these people had ancestors who went to Austrian empire from Turkey, Balkins, Italy and Mediterranean countries.

This last horrible year has challenged my own personal uninformed beliefs. I bought into so many negations of the diversity of Israel. My eyes have been opened wide and I love what I see! Of course these foods are Israeli foods because no matter the ethnicities, who add to their traditions to the flavorful, aromatic and colorful cuisines, they are still Israeli, and are embraced by the diverse Israeli community.

I say this as an Arab, muslim..If the Arab neighboring countries were not so occoupied with hate and ignorance towards jews and israel they would truly enjoy visiting that placel.. i was shocked when i travelled to israel in 2014, i have canadian passport but i am from Syria in 1 day, I understood everything they teach us in arab countries (in my case Syria) about jews and israel is a lie.. i had the best time there, i met many happy arabs muslim working with jews, honestly most israelis looked arab to me (the men) the women you can see were different than arab women (the way the dress and also look more mixed)... In one street in tel aviv you can eat food from 50+ different countries. I found syrian food that was very interesting to me, it was Syrian restaurant but different way of how we make it back home. There is a lot of yemeni and morrocan jews in israel (i had no idea). It reminded me of Lebanon but more developed and more expensive haha.. It felt like the middle east with a cool interesting twist abd very open (kind of like Christian Lebanese culture). This trip change my whole view on everything. As Arabs we are 100% lied to about israel and the people (its white Europeans, muslims are treated very bad) total bullshit. I understood after my trip. I was in Acre and Yafo and in north Israel in a few arab muslim towns, it was beautiful and they are living in better conditiins most people in syria or most arab countries i visited. I think all muslims need to see it for themselves, i think its the only way for muslims to understand the truth.
