We all have a certain image of what our lives should look like or what measures success based on social norms - have a good job, partner, dog, house, kids at a certain point in life, make X amount of money, drive X brand of car, yada yada. While few of you may have achieved these goals, many more of you likely struggle to achieve that idea of a ‘perfect life’. All of this make it easy to judge, compare or contrast one another, and as a result we often hide the hardships that we go through out of shame or embarrassment - the loss of a job or a loved one, a messy breakup or divorce, heartbreak, illness, depression, midlife or quarter life crisis, etc. We’re taught that those hardships should be hidden because they aren’t part of a ‘happy normal life’, yet these hardships very much a part of life, and we can look to the world around us for insight on what it takes to keep on keeping on.
When we picture a ‘tree’, often the same, simple, perfect little figure pops up, yet when we look at the world around us…those trees don’t actually exist. In reality, trees bend with the wind, lose branches, mould and adapt to traumas and obstacles that are thrown its way, creating twists and turns that only make it more unique. Those quirks are a sign of a life well lived, struggles overcome and hardships endured that makes each tree absolutely beautiful in its own way, despite looking nothing like the ‘perfect little tree’ we imagine in our minds. If we can learn anything from these trees, these forests, the outdoor world, it’s that these experiences shape each and every one of us, and only make each one of us more unique, more beautiful in our own individual way.
That perfect little life you imagine or see on instagram doesn’t exist - hardships are a normal part of life that we all endure, and it’s those same hardships that make us who we are, that add resilience through scars and stories of how we overcame and kept on keeping on.
So to whoever needs to hear this - there is no need to feel shame or embarrassment from the hardships of life, from anything you’ve gone through or are going through. These experiences may be difficult, but dammit you are resilient, and you will grow stronger through this, and when all is said and done, you may have more twists and arcs than the other trees around you, but you are absolutely gorgeous just the way you are.
Keep on keeping on, you beauties.
