Why does Ryu have a violet belt ? Should be black or even red (9th Dan in Japanese martial arts)

The match-up should really be Jin vs. Dante from DMC and Ryu vs. Liu Kang from M.K, so really Devil vs. Devil and Martial artist vs. Martial artist I know Jin is a martial artist, but with his Devil gene, he is more of a match for DCM characters.
