Do you think you could put like a stretchy sock over the filter to catch the larger particles? If youve seen the blueair prefilters then you might know what i mean. Its like the same material as they use for neck gaiters

I have this same CAT fan, and it's not a 4,000 CFM fan. It's a 2300 CFM fan, says so on the box, and on CAT's website. Bought this fan a month ago. Same identical model number. I'm guessing CAT figured this out too and changed the box labels.

Do you or anyone else have any issues with air flow being restricted and blowing out the back end of the fan? I tried to do the exact same build, and it does seem to work pretty well, but it feels like the air is funneling around the fan and some is going into the filter but some is blowing away from the fan. The air close to the center of the fan gets pulled into the filter but the air towards the edges of the fan seems like it is blowing out and a away from the fan rather than getting sucked in. I'm thinking this is because the fan is just slightly bigger than the opening of the filter? Have you experienced something similar? Any suggested fixes?

Cool, but I think you should be running the opposite direction. I guess the filters aren't designed for that.

How has this been working a year in? Have you experienced any issues or done any design changes? I’m looking into putting one together for some drywall work since that dust just gets everywhere. Sorry if this was answered in a comment already somewhere, I may have missed it.

As soon as I saw that filter, I immediately thought about how they look exactly like the intake filters for the HEMTTs I used to work with in the Army motorpool. Any possibility that commercial vehicle intake filters could be more cost effective and/or easier to acquire?

Thanks for sharing. It just makes a lot more sense to me to have a filter like that at table height or below instead of overhead anyway. Dust doesn't rise. Gravity is going to pull the particles DOWN. I have never understood having one on the ceiling.

Ok I bought the same stuff you have here but with the fan in place the filter is 1-1/2 ID smaller. Do you get a little back recirculated around the fan intake?

Fan pulling air into the filter (Fan at the bottom) is better than fan pushing dust into the filter (Fan on top). Saves fan also and may lose some performance.

I built one using this exact fan and filter. The middle of the fan sucks air in, but it blows out around the edges of the fan. I suspect the filter doesn't let enough air pass through it, and the excess air is coming back out. Do you have any tips?

I took a much smaller round filter and attached it to a duct fan using duct tape and one slip tie. It's nice to know you can just blow out the dust to clean it and I never would have thought about using neodymium magnets to attach wheels for roll a bouts. .Great matter of fact presentation!

1- Your motor should be on the opposite side, BEHIND YOUR FILTERS!!!
2- Plus, your using a propeller fan which is NOT MADE FOR STATIC PRESSURE.
Super bad idea without the right knowledge. Waste of time.

This might actually be perfect for what I was looking for. I live in an incredibly dusty environment. With a bedroom window that opens to the side of a house with nothing but dry dirt on the ground and a lot of electronics in my room, layers and layers of dust is a common annoyance. Just putting this thing under my window might completely catch everything before it has a chance to spread in the room.

Very good combination, awesome, and simple.... but I'm wondering should the fan be faced up so it draws air into the filter from the outside. This way it can filter the air that gets sucked into the fan, which will most definitely extend the life of the motor. Is the filter only made for one direction?

Ответить
@ModernOllie

Which direction does the filter flow? Wouldn’t had been best for air to be pulled through the filter vs pushed through? I imagine the fan motor being damaged from all the dust.

Wondering if you or anyone else here has ever thought about adding something like this to a water bucket, like a water bong, where the dust would first get sucked into the water in the bottom of the bucket, then the air would continue into the fan and through the filter???

Might be overkill, but would be interesting, even without the filter and just using the water to collect the waste???

Maybe this is a dumb idea, but it's one I was thinking about for a sealed enclosure for a side by side to keep the dust out, because it's insane how much dust covers you and is unavoidable when following someone on a dusty gravel road, which happens a lot for me... I'm absolutely covered with a thick layer of dust when finished, and it's horrific to breath in as well. The dust lingers on the road for a long time as well most days, so it's not really something you can just wait to avoid if you are out riding around with others.

Anyway, I just figured it might be easier to dump the gross water out, instead of blowing the filter out all over the place when cleaning it.

When I tried this setup, there seems to be some air that is squeezed back through the outer edges of the fan. Has anyone else noticed that happening? I wonder if the fans are generating too little pressure to push through the filter.

Great video! Can anyone name/identify the fastener that Wynn sends that is used in this video? I purchased a Donaldson filter which does not come with fasteners/brackets. I am trying to create something similar, but this appears to be some sort of modified hose clamp with the little hooks to grab into a ledge. I am not sure if this is an item made specifically by Wynn for this application, but I cant seem to find any fasteners/clamps that are similar. Thanks!
