You can also use your leg for assisted pull up by standing on a small chair. Its the most convenient way and you can vary the amount of resistance with your leg very easily. Its like the last exercise you showed except that you are standing under a full height bar on a raised platform with your leg bent

When working on Resistance Exercises to target the lats to build up the strength to get my first ever Pull-Up, should I focus mainlu on hypertrophy (8-12 rep range), or mainly on strength ( 4-6 rep range)?
Doing mainly Bent Over Rows (both Pronated and Supinated Grips), One Arm DB Rows, Straight Arm Pushdowns, Lat Pulldowns with a Twist (to really stretch the lats), DB Pullovers, along with Pull-Up Negatives (can do 20 seconds), Band Assisted Scapula Shrug Pull-Ups.
Just not sure if more muscle size or strength would be more helpful. Or probably a combination.

I think the reason why this exercise is one of the most difficult for people who can't do it, first and foremost is psychological, and it's the shame, and Ill explain.

For a man, while all the men around him know how to do push ups, pull ups etc..
it is super embracing to a point where it feels impossible to do push up on your knees, or pull ups with assistant or any progression exercises... Hangs and shrugs are maybe somehow fine because they stand as individual exercises of their own besides the pull up, but negatives and assistant pull ups are sooo embarrassing to do, no matter if its in the gym or in public play ground.

The difference between let say push ups and pull up is that push ups is something you can work on and progress at in your private space at home, while pull ups requires a bar, which is difficult to install in rented old houses, and maybe for others is just a fuss, it less accessable.. ending up with the result that many of the people who never learned to do it, can stay at this status for many many long years (me included, I can say it here under anonymity).

I wish there was a work out plan that everyone can do in their private homes that work on their pull ups without a bar... But there isn't, you have to do the thing itself to master it.

That's my honest take on this subject, give a like if you agree.

The smith machine is op for calisthenics. There would be days were all the camera girls and douche bags would hog up all the weights and machines. And yet, I would destroy my entire body with a towel and smith machine. When it comes to calisthenics, you're only limited by your imagination.

I don't know how I did it the first time. But I used to have a ring suspended from my ceiling that my mom had set up for me to hang by as she thought doing that would make me taller (It didn't work). I used to practise my chin-ups and pull-ups using those rings. Recently, I have joined a gym for the first time in my life and while I can't even pull off 10 push-ups in a row or beyond 10kg in bench press, I can do 10 pull-ups easily. I never realised that pull-ups were so difficult for most people and that it is considered an 'advanced' exercise that beginners are not expected to be able to do. Even my trainer can't pull off more than 12 pull-ups in a row.

I looked up the correlation between pull-downs and pull ups. The title of the important study is:
"Relationship of pull-up repetitions to maximal and relative lat-pull strength in trained athletes.
Sánchez Moreno M, Díaz Cueli D, García Asencio C, González Badillo JJ."

These are the conclusions:
Pull-ups were significantly related to lat-pull reps BM (0.62) but not
to 1RM lat-pull (0.09). No relationship were observed between lat-
pull reps to BM and 1RM lat-pull. Body mass, LBM and muscle mass
were significantly related to pull-up performance, to 1RM lat-pull and
to lat-pull reps BM. Absolute body fat was significantly related to pull-
ups and lat-pull reps BM (table 1).

1) So 1RM lat-pull has no effect on max number of pull ups. In other words being able to pull more than your body-weight on the lat-pull machine has zero effect anymore. Better stick at your weight, but make repetitions.

2) Quite a decent relationship between repetitions at body mass (at your weight) on lat pull machine and doing pull-ups. Hoover, 0.62 indicates that you should do more types of exercises to train your core and grip, mind your weight as well.

3) older people rejoice: there's only a relationship of- 0.22 (negative 0.22) between age and pull ups. You too will perform better on the pull-down machine compared with pull ups, but with age the difference will be less (positive corr of 0.32 ). So whilst age in hindering you a bit (-0.22), it's still entirely doable, Body mass and untrained muscles are your real enemies as well.

Super short story: Lat pull-down machine: train up to your body weight, and then focus on reps, not more weight. More weight is useless for high performance pull-ups.

PS: there's also Lean Body Mass: whilst LBM makes pull-ups harder, despite LBM having a positive effect on absolute strength. LBM has a negative correlation of -0.52. So advanced bodybuilders are seriously disadvantaged for high pull-up performance despite their phenomenal strength.
