Colvin will be fine once he learns to use his wild athletic skills to pay solid defense. He looks lost on defense a and that is the sole reason he doesn't get more minutes. His offensive skill set is already elite. But his defense is too often second rate. But he'll get it, and he'll be great. Sometimes these super talented offensive guys can't understand it doesn't matter how good your offense is if you let your guy score on you so easily when you're on defense. But don't we want guys who want to play?? Work on your defense Myles, you stud!

He can't play defense right now. He's worse than Loyer and Loyer ain't good. He wants to play, focus on defense. It's not hard. If he just gets to mediocre on defense he probably rockets up in minutes

Matt Painter doesn't care who you are, if you can't play defense, you aren't gonna be out there too much ("Oh your dad is a football legend here? Cool story bro"). The moment Colvin gets his D up to par, and he will, he will get serious minutes.

As for Ethan Morton, he's getting minutes because...wait for it...he hustles on D. As great as Purdue's offense is, Painter will never sway on the requirement to work hard on defense. It's just the DNA of the program.

Brandon Newman found out the hard way & I liked him but, It’s the players job to make the coach happy, not the other way around. The coach has recruited guys who can shoot threes, all of them can. The team can get wins in March if they can play better defense at guard.

Clearly hosts dont pay attention to Purdue hoops culture of “Defense Lives Here” (why Morton playing more, even if for Morton less than he did earlier in his time as Boiler) or Painter on record repeatedly about freshmen should not anticipate they get lots of minutes because they were good in HS. Do think his pro athlete father and Purdue grad, and all BIG Ten sister Purdue vball star would not be encouraging him to seek other after freshman season on top team either.

Morton vs. Colvin, come on. Morton is an excellent defender, Colvin is not. Purdue has all the offense on the court it needs, it often needs help on defense. Hence Morton gets lots of minutes, Colvin does not.

I’ll say I felt like Colvin and Morton’s minutes should have been flipped early in the season. I’ll even say there have been some games where I wanted Morton to be the DNP Coach’s choice.

But. Ethan Morton showed why he gets the minutes he gets in conference play, none more so than the IU game. Morton came in a few minutes into the second half when Galloway got hot and was ready to blow the roof off the building… next thing you know Galloway disappears. It’s like he vanished from the court. That’s Morton’s role, and he does it to near perfection.

It’s about like we have 4 players on offense when he’s in, but he makes the opposition play with 4 players too. More often than not, Purdue’s 4 can score more than the other team’s 4.

I'm confident his father & mother have raised well balanced individuals. I'm sure Myles hates watching but I'm sure he knows he can grow through adversity. I like his, "I should be in the game #@#!!!" attitude - so he must enter an empty his tank on defense + offense + leadership every time & he'll get him on the court - I'm sure his father (& sister) in his ear. Myles is a big time person.

Morton plays defense and he plays in situations when they have other scorers on the court but when they need a stopper. Colvin is LOST on defense and Purdue needs better defense. They don't need yet another scorer. Myles needs to get on board if he's not on board with what he needs to do to break through into the lineup. He's a great player and should play a lot next year, but he needs to learn the defensive system and play it better. He's also kind of tentative in most games even on offense. Sometimes lost getting the plays executed. Time will tell with him, and next season will be the time.

Good analysis Sleepers!! Great work. I also don't think he said what the tweet thinks he said. Glad you called that out. I think it was a frustration either at the defender or just the release of frustration that he finally saw the ball go in. Remember he barely missed a nice pull up 18 footer a possession or two before. And this clip claims it happened after Jones didn't pass him the ball but that's not actually when it happened. Rowdy Boiler is a good twitter account but he botched this one big time. Colvin will be fine. Gonna be a Purdue great by the time he's done and I believe he'll play professionally too.

Why is it that a guy who has scored 20 points in 20 games is ahead of Colvin. Basketball is played on both ends. If you are as bad as Morton, you should never see the floor. I don’t care that he’s a defensive specialist. He’s not an athlete. He’s trash.

I want to watch Myles go off as much as the next Purdue fan, but the biggest constant in Painter's run as HC is if you don't play defense, you don't play. It is as simple as that. I like the fire, I like that he makes the most of his minutes but you have to grind the other end of the floor to get Painter's attention. It doesn't need to be all conference defense, but it certainly has to improve from what we have seen so far. He has all the tools, he will get there!

Colvin was key in the wins vs Gonzaga & Bama. Painter is careful with him because we already have the best kenpom offense and need D. Don’t need anyone to take over offensively or it might disrupt the team offense (ie Jaden Ivey vs St Peters in his last Purdue game). His team d (communication and switching) isn’t the best, but his on ball d is way better than most of our backcourt less Jones. Colvin is going to be a star at Purdue very soon (probably playing 20+ min per game next season), and I agree Painter has to start playing him more this season when we’re up to keep him engaged. Y’all gotta remember Heide redshirted so that may be why Paint is playing him more…he probably learned a lot defensively in that red shirt year. That being said, Colvin does look a little lost on d sometimes but he will get better with more reps. Fact of the matter is we don’t need more offense this season, we need more defense and play making this season …which is why Morton and Heide are probably getting more of his mins.

Good Morning,
Purdue class of '96, and here is my take. Dad played football at Purdue and then the NFL, his sister is on the volleyball team. I don't think Myles is going anywhere. That being said, someone on the current roster will probably enter the portal and open up a spot for a 5th year senior transfer to come in.

Also, Matt Painter is part of one of my favorite plays ever in Mackey Arena. From an exhibition game in 1992, and I was in Boiler Brass for it.
