George Walker (1922–2018) was an American composer and the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music (for his Lilacs for voice and orchestra). Walker truly had a special understanding and sympathy for the greatest musical traditions of the past, which manifested into a distinctive, alluring, and meaningful musical idiom that is uniquely his. To me, he is one of the greatest composers of the 20th and 21st centuries and of all time.
This recording of the Prelude and Caprice, his earliest piano work, comes from an October 13, 2022, matinee recital at CIM where I also played his Piano Sonatas Nos. 2 and 5.
