Immagine being a commander of a tank platoon and suddenly the tank next to you fires and the mussle blast takes your head of.
Thats why the muzzle break on a 76mm gun barrel is optional. Unlike german tanks where they tryed to squeze the biggest gun possible in a small turret, the sherman could also fire without the muzzle break.

In ww2 my granddad’s friend was the commander of an m18 hellcat tank, and one day they were waiting for the radio man to tell them when too shoot, but the Sargent said they had to wait until he was out of the way but the guy new that as soon as the radio guy told them to fire they had to shoot, because they were shooting at a moving vehicle, 2 miles away. Well when the radio man said fire, he shot, and the Sargent was not yet clear of the tank so when he shot, the Sargent flew in the air end over end about 3 times. Then the guy asked the radio man to tell him to shoot again ( just so he could send the stupid Sargent flying again)but the radio man said he didn’t need to because he made a direct hit the first time!

I’ve always loved this story, seeing this video reminded me so much of the guy. We really do miss him, he had some pretty cool stories.
