The sport is called athletics. Americans can focus just on the track or on the field, but both are here to stay regardless what Johnson says.

This is an American thing. The sport needs more exposure to the public. There's no coverage of track on sports talk shows and most folks have no clue when meets are shown, or when the season starts.

I'm not sure what you are basing that on by saying one of the most successful "Olympics", maybe it was to the fans, but for the athletes, it was a nightmare in terms of the facilities & even the taking away the rounds making it all but impossible for some to actually qualify for the final, races to qualify for was all horrible; "STOP🤷‍♂️LYING"!!! Amen 🙏!!!

The people that love track & field (athletics) will always love it. The people that don't probably won't be persuaded to. Leave it at that. But I get it everyone wants to post content that riles people up and gets the populace enraged about something that truly is not life and death.
Distance events are also being phased out of both Diamond Leagues and the new Grand Slam Track league...that's what makes me sad.

Lets be honest. The men’s final 100m dash is the most watched thing. Always has been always will be. Fastest men, easiest race to understand and watch. Field events are cool, no doubt but they're not easy for people who've never watched track. Deal with it

Polevaulting has saved itself. Let’s face it, watching pole vault live is pretty tedious. It takes longer than any other event, and only has brief seconds of action. It’s great to watch the highlights, though. What a lot of people don’t realize is that it has become its own thing. You can get street vaults in places like Michigan, Key West, Charlotte, and all over the country. No other events, justpolevault. The Masters polevault community is thriving. They are polevault gyms all over the country. Pole vaulting doesn’t need to be saved.

It’s a very very to think a person can change the subject Olympics get the over yourself, only way I can see that happening is to sponsor the event. You want to give people not in track to feel less than. I don’t really like the 5000 meter races are you going to stop that too ♊️

This is how you "save" Track and Field: Field events on Saturday & Track events on Sunday OR vice versa. NOTHING is more annoying as a T & F fan, than having field events during track races. Also the TV coverage of distance events needs to change. They got to stop showing 3 laps in the 5000, then go to commercial break, then come back and show field events, {of which the vast majority of attempts are FOULS} then all of a sudden Kara comes back on and there's 2 laps to go. Gee, thanks a million !! I missed laps 4 through 10 !!

Personally, I enjoy both track and field events. I love the women's high jump more than any track event.
The field events do take hours to peak and that time frame is at odds with track events. To give field events their deserved attention a separate event is required. So, let's take GST off the hook.
Is it not possible for each field event to have a preliminary heat to qualify for a final that would involve the top 5 or 6 athletes going for a certain number of attempts?
Secondly, the events happen in pairs - say, male high jump and female high jump - and viewers can click back and forth between two different events or watch them both on a split screen setting - the idea is the viewer has control over which event they want to see first and they can skip events if they want. So, a non-linear programming style as opposed to the linear programming of track events. There is definitely a fanbase. Ultimately, it's not that complicated.

The true issue lies in the fact that the sport is so genetics-based. The same nations continue to win the same titles year on year. Athletics just so happens to be one of those sports where the driving factor in whether or not you have a shot at winning or not is down to your genetics, there’s very little that skill can offer, so as a result of that, the same names and the same nations win, year on year, it becomes predictable and there’s rarely any excitement or anticipation for who could win

If Michael Johnson is "long gone" how is that he's probably mentioned at some point at least once during any major track event that's broadcast on air. Any time the 200m or 400m is run, his name is always mentioned. The man has 4 Olympic golds and 8 world championship golds.

Either way I love track & field, always have, always will; I just want to see them get compensated.

Those events just needs coverage and reintroduction to the rules and techniques being brought forward. The objective is the find the best at each event how it's formatted for television viewers to keep spectators interested and vested in the support of their favorite field events.

The one change I expect to see some time in the future is an acceleration competition and a top speed event.
I think these two categories can bring a new fan base and sub categories such as base 0-1 second, base 1-2 seconds & base 0-1 KPH, base 1-2 KPH, etc...
The technology already exists to chart these metrics on peaks and degree slopes that fans can easily follow and get excited about.

The narrative framing is alarming. Ryan Crouser has only 200k followers, and Chopra is the first medalist in athletics from the most populous country in the world. Field events are less popular, it is what it is. Michael Johnson doesn’t want to save anything; he wants to make money. And like most people who want to make money, he is taking the easiest path.

I, for one, have had enough of watching the same athletes lining up for the same event time after time. As all of the athletes want to win and reach the moon (or jump over it) it's always an inspiration to watch the efforts of exceptional athletes (who I don't know) in their efforts in competing with one of our super-heroes.

I imagine that more in the idea of local teams competing with each other, it would be incredibly interesting (for me) to pit, say, Bensonhurst athletes in competition with Bay Ridge athletes and have a team of professionals filling out the field. I'd come to watch my local hero and learn just how wonderful my rival-hero also is.

Not sure if it needs saving or if the "soap" nature of a tv show is a positive but it likely does increase interest.

I like Grand Slam because it will make the diamond league inc prize pools to compete, but ultimately I feel that the diamond league coupled with world athletics events is the best display of the sport. The diamond league does a great job of using field events to fill the gaps between running events—which grand slam will never be able to do. I also firmly believe that everyone has a niche in this sport and that isn’t possible if you take the field events away.

It's easily possible to slot one field event at a time into a televised track meet and fit the product that GST is promoting. However, athletes would need to understand that their attempts run to the meet director's schedule, not their own. When it's time to perform, there is no time for them to still be preparing.

The biggest problem is getting some type of network support. There has to be a schedule where track fans know when and where to tune in. If the biggest part of the promotion isn't on how to watch the events then the whole point of Grand Slam Track is mute. Create it and they will come only works if they know when and where to come too. I search hi and lo to be able to find track event that I know are going on. The best I can do is find highlights of the event after the fact.
