I knew two openly gay soldiers while I was on active duty. The difficulties the main character went through were very similar to what those two must have went through.
I tried to be there for them, but Military culture eventually won out. Those two got a lot of crap for who they where, so I can see why they wanted out as soon as their contracts where up.

Heart breaking .. some people just need friends to share the pain of being indifferent… if one can find a friend who understands your differences you can be the King of the world

Attraction is about the totality of a person, it is a combination of several things. Not appearance alone, in fact appearance does not always have to be decisive at all.

That a man is heterosexual, there is nothing more turn-OFF for me. This is because I know that he is not interested in me, and that there can never be anything between us, we can of course be friends, but nothing more. It is in no way sexy to think that the man is straight, no matter how good his looks are, no matter what personality he has. If he is herero, he is NOT attractive. It is difficult for me to turn-ON a man, because before I can feel a turn-on feeling, I first have to know that the man is gay before I feel attracted to him
