Cyphre is the lone customer in an elegant restaurant enjoying a simple breakfast of coffee and boiled eggs. Plus it’s the 1950’s and he has a calm demeanor, dressed well, has long hair in a ponytail, beard, and fingernails that have never been clipped or bitten a day in their life. A red flag for sure!

One of my favorite scenes in the movie.

Perhaps, Louis Cypher was a common man who sold his soul to Devil and got in good terms with him.

Folk lore has it that one should fling a pinch of salt over one's left shoulder, so as to keep the devil away. Here we see Johnny seated at a table in a restaurant with none other than the devil himself.
Johnny flicks a pinch of salt over his shoulder. Little does he know the company he keeps.
Alas, the salt gesture is pure ineffectual superstitious nonsense.

just noticed. He literally offered him his soul back after tempting him with money. Hell he even salted it, which in some superstitions is a purifier. He salted the egg, purifying the soul absolved it of its debts owed.
He gave him a choice: the money or your soul.

Poor Angel chose the money.

To add to that, he even removed the salt Cypher put on the egg and tossed it over his shoulder. Tossing salt over the shoulder is usually done for good luck. In this instance it was anything but.

Eggs are a representation of the soul in religions and acts of witchcraft. Cypher tells him what he will do with his soul

he smiles at his turbulence cause cyphre already knew it all about johny and still told him to find things for himself just to fuck him up before finally taking him , the salt on the egg was the symbol of that diabolical game the devil plays before consuming a soul, spicing things up . ! what a stunning portrayal of symbolism . De Niro really played this role perfectly , less is more he told to dicaprio once , he did just that and its breathtakingly beautiful . such an underrated film !!!!!!!

I only came here to see more of Deniro with a beard. After the Mission I couldn't get enough lol

Yeah Harry Angel fucking hates chickens!! And Louis Cypher= Lucifer...great movie Mickey Rourke at his best during the 80's.

Not a very subtle movie. Metaphor was already dead by the late 80s. Overt symbolism become the order of the day as audiences were already highly conditioned by the blockbuster. I find De Niro had, by then, mastered the art of understated scenery chewing—literally, as you can ascertain from the consumption of the egg.

One of my favorite movies, exactly for scenes like this

My opinion the last time you saw old acting Deniro...with the mystique and the aura...by the next year it was gone...turned natural from supernatural.
