In his final film, F.W. Murnau weaves a poignant tale of two young lovers on the enchanting island of Bora Bora, whose blissful existence is shattered when an old warrior proclaims the girl as the Chosen Maid, forbidden to be gazed upon by any man. Defying tradition, the couple escapes to a decadent, westernized island where the boy's naivety about money leads him into a web of debt. As the old warrior pursues them, the boy makes a desperate choice to dive for pearls in treacherous, shark-infested waters, unaware that fate has other plans to keep them apart.
