In January of 2016, three gifted artists, Malian Griot Cheick Hamala Diabate, bluegrass banjoist Sammy Shelor, and multi-instrumentalist Danny Knicely participated in a residency at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke, as part of a program called “Africa to Appalachia.”
During their stay, the artists explored the connections between West African and Appalachian musical styles and culture. Activities included intimate jam sessions, a large assembly for local school children, and an evening concert.
They also worked with students of the Jefferson Center’s Music Lab, which provides local youth with valuable experiences in music performance and recording.
Thanks to The Jefferson Center and the students and faculty at Music Lab.
Produced by Jon Lohman and Pat Jarrett.
