Mostly Vegan. Kind of Chinese: Fat Choy in Englewood, NJ

Fat Choy, once described by its owner as "Kind of Chinese. Also vegan," is no longer fully vegan, but it's still kind of Chinese and, of course, fully delicious.

The much-lauded restaurant first launched in NYC's East Village in 2020 with a vegan menu of Chinese-inspired creative dishes like its famed Mushroom Sloppy, a take on the American favorite Sloppy Joe. It was quickly named one of the best new restaurants in New York, landing on the "best of" lists of seemingly every food critic in the city. Pandemic and inflationary pressures forced the restaurant's closure — until it reopened in Englewood, NJ in 2023.

It wasn't long before Fat Choy made an impression yet again. The New York Times named it to their 2023 Restaurant List as one of "50 places they are most excited about right now," with famed food critic Pete Wells lavishing it with praise. But moving to a new market means adapting to different tastes.

Fat Choy recently closed to rework their concept — and we had the opportunity to try their newest iteration. Still in their new Bergen County location, Fat Choy now offers a fast-casual concept with a build-your-own bowl menu — and real meat! While the core of the menu is filled with vegan items, you can now get shrimp, beef, and chicken to top your bowl. Of course, you can still choose to skip the animal products if you're vegan! (Bonus: Fat Choy is Kosher-certified, so it's a great option if you keep Kosher.)

The premium ingredients are sourced from local farms, and you can taste the difference. These are not wilted, flavorless veggies pulled from cans or freezers and doused in heavy sauces. Instead, the careful seasoning brings out the natural taste of the veggies — leading to a delicious meal that's also healthy. You can also get Chinese favorites like hot & sour soup, wonton soup, and egg rolls to complement your meal.
