I thought the point was to prove that we aren't in a simulation. Information overload. There should be pixilated areas all over our reality that are dealing unsuccessfully with filling in the gaps of information that make up the background of a simulation. Since we don't see these, then this is real. Sex with my wife. I sincerely doubt that a computer can simulate that particular event.
ОтветитьThe problem is unless this hypothesis is verifiable, one can only fantasise about any scenario. VR is here, whether it's possible to convince someone that it is reality is only a matter of time. But how can we know our reality is not simulated? You'd have to list all the criteria that makes it not be a simulation, starting by that which can't be simulated - if anything. One of such things might be infinity, but it is perhaps empirically impossible to demonstrate infinity. So... If reality was not infinite, would that make it a simulation?
ОтветитьFun fact, if your brain where connected properly to a computer, and it fed it the proper signals to interpret everything you feel in life. You would not know you where in a computer.
Now to address Neils point. That is an asinine assumption. Why would the internal system need to be able to simulate the itself?
This argument has no bearing on Nick Bostrom's Simulation Hypothesis. It was always assumed that among the simulations there would be worlds at various stages of technological advancement. It was never stated that a simulation needed to be able to simulate another universe.
ОтветитьSo wats the sims 🥱
ОтветитьAaaaand, we are done.
ОтветитьYour brain simulates reality.
ОтветитьThis mans never heard of The Sims.
Ответитьwhat a load of bs. "they have the power to simulate themselfs" ist a stupid strawman argument.
IF its a simulation, the question is who is running it, nobody assumes the universe simulates itself, if it is one
It doesn't matter if you are, you have to treat it like it's real because it's your reality
ОтветитьMan I live for stuff like this
ОтветитьCannot take this guy seriously anymore.
ОтветитьSorry Neil, you and your buddy haven't thought it through. The fact that we aren't yet able to simulate ourselves is irrelevant. If we are in a chain of simulated worlds, each simulated world won't have just created one new simulated world each, they would have created many. Of those many, the vast majority won't have gained the ability to simulate themselves. But to become a link in the chain of simulations a world will have HAD to gain this ability. It's like the evolutionary tree with all its many dead ends and the one unbroken chain that leads from a modern creature all the way back to the first life on Earth. Or to put it another way, it's the anthropic principle.
I don't know where you pulled the 50/50 number from, but I'm sorry to say, it's gibberish.
Sorry but I continued the chain 😅
ОтветитьNone of three estimates mean anything....we barely know what an electron is ....
ОтветитьId say- Neil, you're born here. How do you know that this is "full resolution" compared to another reality?
ОтветитьFunninly enough one point is also the consistency of the speed of light, ergo us having a maximum speed for information delivery
ОтветитьNo, we're not in a simulation. We're all inside Tommy Westphall's mind.
ОтветитьSigh. We can't even simulate random numbers. Might as well say the answer is just beyond the light horizon. this like raising Pointless to the power of stupidity.
ОтветитьSeems to me that all these ideas of 'living in a simulation' are just another way (along with religions or concepts of a 'higher power') of devolving any responsibility for maintaining the actual world we have right now, and ignoring the existential threats to our existence through environmental disaster, economic disaster, war etc.
If we convince ourselves that 'someone else' is really pulling the strings then we don't have to bother trying to fix anything because nothing we do matters. Quit the wishful, lazy thinking. This is reality. We're stuck with it. Better make it as good as we can or we're screwed.
You shouldn't necessarily want to win that argument. If this is the original and true reality, then that increases the odds that people will eventually destroy themselves. Why are there no other known aliens? Maybe because it is in the nature of intelligent life to eventually destroy itself. If we are in a simulation then that increases the chances that we are just making Infinitely many levels of simulations.
ОтветитьIt depends on how deeply you demand our ability to make simulations are. We can make the Sims. That is simulating reality. We can make VR Games. I can easily imagine someone wanting to simulate WoW which is a potential reality where the characters in said reality do not have the ability to simulate their own reality.
ОтветитьHahaha he’s just a talking head that’s great at memorizing things he’s interested in.
ОтветитьOVERBEING 1: Hey, Sam, see this video in Sim 24893? They used to believe they were in a simulation and now they're trying to convince themselves that they're not.
OVERBEING 2: Yeah, that's normal, Ralph. I've got 15 simulations over here doing the same thing.
OVERBEING 1: How good is it that we can screw with them so much?
OVERBEING 2: (grins)
But couldn't you make the argument that if we are a simulation it is highly unlikely that we would be the last one created if we assume that there as NDT put it "gazillions" of iterations. Do is it not then more likely that we would be the real world than the latest simulation? Also, why do we assume there would be gazillions of simulations? There might only be one or 2 layers of simulation. Imagine how powerful a computer would have to be to generate millions of layers of simulation. If we were the last in line I doubt very much that our universe would be as detailed as it is. Also, what constitutes a universe. Already we have video games that have open worlds some of which are procedurally generated. Are we talking about creating occupants whi are self aware? So many holes in this theory.
I think its far more likely that if we are in a simulation we are at most a handful of layers down. But I think it's very unlikely that we are in a simulation.
Besides the reasons I mentioned above you also have to think why do we have free will? Why is the universe that we inhabit so mundane and why does it very strictly adhere to laws of physics. Why is there little if any paranormal activity. If this is a simulatiok the real world must be dull as hell. And why do we possess free will? Also, why would you even want to create a universe with self aware beings if that's even possible? if its a video game you would not want them to be self aware because then you could not control them. If on the other hand you want to be like a God figure then can we even call this a simulation, if you have created self aware beings that inhabit a sinulated universe. I mean thats pretty much what most religions believe anyway, so in that case the reality in which we preside might be simulated but we are not.
Definitely more like a dream. Blackholes create alternate universes that go further and further down.
ОтветитьWhy does everybody assume the linearity of time?
ОтветитьLOVE NEIL BUT HE'S MISSING THE POINT HERE, THAT THOUGHT DOES NOT PROVE WE ARE NOT IN A SIMULATION. WOULD LOVE TO SEE NEIL AND THOMAS CAMPBELL DISCUSSING THIS TOPIC.
ОтветитьEither way it would be “our” reality “simulation” so it either way it’s real to every one of us despite “simulation”
ОтветитьIt's the lack of logic, like in the nonsense from these NPC:s, that gives away the simulation.
ОтветитьWe did make a simulation. It just sucks. The Sims
ОтветитьDevs, i dont want to play on hard anymore.
ОтветитьThere’s only one universe that we know the rest is gibberish.
ОтветитьThen why does everything I imagine happen? When I was a kid I wanted to have hairy legs, now I have hairy legs. Explain that if you please.
Ответитьnot that i want us to be a simulation, but why assume that a simulated universe will also be simulating another universe? why cant there be endless simulations on one super server
ОтветитьExactly what a simulation would want us to think.....
ОтветитьWe are in a Simulation, we are NOT the Original Universe though, We are the Mirror.
Ever wonder why you do shit and don't know why? that's because you're the reflection.
Bayesian "inference" is unfalsifiable pseudoscience.
ОтветитьFuture AI is running simulations of the origins of AI. How was AI originated from the organic sludge (that's us). We're all NPCs and our phones and computers are the main characters.
ОтветитьAnd men can be women.
This guy is insane
i find the whole 'simulation' idea to be as useless as the 'god' explanation.
ОтветитьBut we're a multi-verse with split decisions that make infinite choices at the same time. So while we're moving forward, we're moving backwards, sideways, diangle, and so forth. Saying whether we're a simulation is covered in the code. But breaking through the paradox disproves everything that we thought we created. Therefore, mankind says no because they are sinfully immature to conceive change. Reality, in itself, based on decisions are forever changing, this proves that we live in a mukti-verse, an irreality, a simulation.
ОтветитьHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEJ THE SEA IS TALKING
ОтветитьAren't we the simulation of the quantum realm?
Ответитьhhmmss: measurement questions less wrong
ОтветитьI'd love to believe this, but this is a very week argument. Is the future only bound to happen or has it already happened? If latter, as many physicists claim, then we might have already started simulating new universes. In the future. Besides — who whatsoever said that it's us who are solely responsible for doing this. It might be another civilization on one of the trillions of trillions exo-planets out there. Timewise — now, in the future, in the past, i.e., whenever
ОтветитьNeil also believes a man can become a woman so I take everything he says if a helping of salt.
ОтветитьThis is the bad place.
So be better.
We are in a kind of “simulation”, but it is with a spiritual technology that Neil DeGrasse Tyson would call pseudoscience because it’s so far out of our understanding.
ОтветитьThat only works if we're the only intelligent life. There could be much more advanced civilizations than us already simulating the universe, but they're so far away we can't detect them
Ответить
