UCL-Ventura started with a corridor conversation and led to a team of thousands working together in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Within 100 hours the first prototype breathing device was being tested at UCLH. Approval for use from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) was granted in 10 days. £20m of funding was negotiated with the Department for Health and Social Care and 10,000 units were delivered to the NHS within one month. The designs were then licenced free-of-charge to over 2,000 organisations in over 100 countries worldwide. More than 30 countries around the world have locally manufactured in excess of 30,000 versions of the Ventura device. This talk was given by Prof Tim Baker, who co-led the project and received an MBE in recognition of his contribution.
