The battery likely has a 5 to 10 percent over capacity (reserve) that accounts for initial degradation. Many lfp cells niw have more capacity than advertised

Not exactly on topic, but huge news on the renewable energy front: I live in Texas, and we just had several weeks of brutally hot weather due to a "heat dome." And yet.....not one request from my power company to conserve! Why? I presume that the last several years of the huge expansion of solar in my state is responsible. I think this is the third year w/o any rolling brownouts or other inconveniences.

I love how the oil sucking Republicans are being spanked by the renewable industry. Texas already has the most wind power of any state and continues to expand it and solar. O&G has run the state for over 100 years, but it is losing its grip.

I've had a LiFePo4 battery in my motorcycle for at least half a decade or longer, I forget when I bought it tbh. It's still going strong, in spite of annual multi-month winter storage. This is also the battery tech I'd use in a house battery (that I don't have yet).

I'm undecided... Do you have enough data to support that batteries are eco-friendly when compared to conventional ways of energy? Sounds like a dumb question, but extracting lithium seems like a dangerously pollution process. Could it be a good title to compare the different energy technologies in terms of pollution thru their lifetime?

At night when the electrical power grid demand is low these Tesla battery packs are recharged. The benefit is your local power provider will need fewer power plants built to carry the heavy peak loads during the high power demand during the day. Resulting in a more efficient use of your power plants.

Flow cell batteries make all dry cells look stupid and of course last for ever because the electrodes and the electrolyte can be replaced , reprocessed then returned to the battery .
So not only can they be run dead flat without degrading, they can be charged faster & discharged fastes
They can not explode due to thermal run away in fact they can not explode at all ( well the Zn - Br can't anyway ) .
However the USA will never use them because they do not own the technology .

So your premise that the Tena is the only battery that does not degrade over 5 years is totally wrong as the Redflow Battery will run for 30 to 50 years before the electrodes will need replacing.

Did you learn about Cobalt at the Big oil academy for desinformation? Toxic, No. Starts fires, thats a new one to me so probably No. It would be nice if you took 5 minutes to learn how the EV community started fighting a long existing abuse by creating a market for ethically minded cobalt. And that is now plentiful, Finland alone can as of last year supply cobalt for all cars sold in Europe to have NMC batteries. Not just EVs sold, ALL cars!

I'd like to get your take on the recent development with zinc-halide battery chemistry. My understanding is that similar to LFPs they're not as energy dense, but safer still and zinc is significantly more available than lithium. Everything I've seen indicated the intention to use them specifically for ESSs and grid support but I'm personally hoping to see home battery backups and UPS systems using it

NO! Unless you produce a nuclear battery there will never be an “immortal batter.”

If you actually understood battery technology you’d realize 90% of these companies creating magical batteries are complete frauds!

These companies hype their tech to attract investment and government funding! They never produce anything that’s actually commercially viable.

Think!

It is pretty well irrelevant how low the cost of batteries falls. LiFePO4 batteries are reputed to be coming in a or below $100/kWh. I just bought a battery for my weed trimmer. (the old one fried its terminals even though the battery is still perfectly fine). It holds 0.18kWh. The new battery cost me $300. The included batteries were, by using the $100 figure, worth $18. The batteries themselves could be free and a new battery would still be expensive.
