Reacting to Nintendo’s Switch 2 Backwards Compatibility Reveal

I think the successor to the Nintendo Switch can be more successful in terms of the games. Not in terms of sales or even sales of the games, but in terms of delivering quality, enjoyable experiences to their pre existing fan base.

i was so confused why they said this and then i remembered back friday, so they dont want costumers to feel cheated on if they buy switch games and then switch 2 comes out and its not compatible. like "hey dw they will be compatible you can buy without worry"

I love the break down you made about the presentation Furukawa gave, it gives us a better insight, on how Nintendo operates their strategies, and how they're going to move forward into the future. Zelda happens on 202X, like Megaman hahahaha

I just don't see how a more powerful iteration of the same thing is going to sustain long term success for Nintendo. The novelty factor has worn off, it's not 2017 and there's not another breath of the wild type generational game launching along side it. I'm sure it will sell well, but 100 million +?

Nintendo trickling information on the Switch 2 seems to be their strategy to keep some sales before they make the big reveal, while also getting people to stay interested and continue the conversation.

I really hope that Nintendo doesn't change course and go the iterative route that xbox and PS have always done. It's honestly the number one reason I love Nintendo and one of the biggest factors I've stayed with them since I was a kid playing SNES.

So this means the current Joy-cons and procontrollers will work with switch 2?

Backwards compatibility also means that for those who have missed out on the switch 1 library will get great value day 1 of switch 2 and id imagine between that and existing nso offerings that both current switch owners and those who don’t have a switch will hit the ground running enjoying the new console on day 1 instead of waiting for those initial first party AAA releases like 3d Mario or Mario kart.

American company aren't happy they wanted to put a Definitive Edition on it.

It's crazy how big the switch is. Honestly you guys must look back and be like "hot-dog what a ride".

I’d say that Nintendo probably won’t match the success they had as a video game company (though they’ll certainly be very successful nonetheless). However, as an entertainment company, they might.

I'm very glad they're carrying over NSO and having backwards compatability with the Switch. It's such a legacy of games at the launch of the next system. I'm hoping for some kind of upscaling for Switch games if the next system is more powerful.

Nintendo wants consumers to continue buying Nintendo switch games and by telling us that the switch 2 is backwards Compatible basically means, keep buying games because you can still play them on switch 2

Switch is great and sold well. However remember Wii sold well and combined with DS blew away switch in sales. There is no portable only console this past 7 years so remember not as good sales wise overall

Also 12 games coming out in switch 2025 also will be enhanced for switch 2. PS4/ps5 did this many times.

The biggest "what ifs" for me now are the quarter in which the Switch successor and it's price. I wanna be there day 1 if I can, but I'll need enough warning to budget for it in advance!

Aside from that though, there's not a lot I feel like I "need" to know. I'm still curious about whatever this "Switch 2" will be, look like, what features it'll have, etcetera... but I feel like I know enough now to feel confident I'll probably really like the upgrade. :)

Legit question: Do you guys regret leaving Nintendo now that they are succeeding in all areas or was that another driving factors that the success caused more issues with your work there.

The biggest problem Nintendo will have (just like Playstation and XBox) is that in this last generation a lot of classic games have been ported to the Switch (one way or another). They have to rely on New games, ports of last gen games from other systems, and games from the Switch. I find it hard to list 10 classic games that aren’t on the Switch already. This could make the lineup seem a lot thinner with longer development times.

My biggest concern with switch 2 is that due to leaks we’ve already known what the hardware is for… literal years already? For a home console that’s already underpowered having it being several years out of date on top of that seems like a bad idea. It can be underpowered but by the standards of what we can do in 2025, not 2021.

Nintendo should go the route of Sony's Playstation number naming console. Switch 2 should be NS2, then NS3, etc.

I'm surprised at the timing at this bit of news. I doubt very many people were focused on gaming news on Tuesday night.

I think this was just some basic information because people were craving for something. It doesn't portend too much otherwise. Nintendo also said Switch games would be "playable" on the successor, and that does not strictly mean backwards compatible.

Now hoping for "Enhanced" patches for at least 1st party titles. 🙏
Imagine Mario & Luigi Brothership without those muddy textures that make it look an emulated 3DS game. Faster load times, draw distance etc.!

I didn't think about why they'd reveal this until now; to reduce concerns buying Switch products this Christmas that will somehow become obsolete when the new console launches.

That's a fair move to make, unfortunately this message will not reach most players. But the venn diagram of people who don't hear this, but do know there's a new Switch coming, has a tiny intersection area.

Honestly as a lapsed/sometimes gamer backwards compat is big for me. I've only lpayed a few switch games.

I have a massive Switch collection and them announcing backwards compatibility made me buy a few more games to complete some of my collections. I plan on buying a console for my wife and one for myself. Hopefully Scarlet and Violet will run better and give me a reason to return.

I hope they do something you could customize the console with like the 3ds with faceplates.

Switch 1 and 2 are both ARM devices running skinned Android, of course they're compatible. It would be insulting if they weren't.

Strategic timing of the backwards compatibility announcement. I always knew the successor wouldn’t be revealed until 2025. This backwards compatibility news was Nintendo’s way of giving us a Switch successor update while not actually giving us a reveal at the same time.

Can't wait to see the Zelda movie in 202X😅

So now that worry is over my next question is cross platform, both cross play and cross save are huge for me bc I don't want to have to replace all 3 (mine and my kids') consoles at one time if I can avoid it.
