R's concertos are far better than his formless, cloud-filled symphonies IMO. Those go nowhere and reveal no further depth. But let a soloist like HH emerge from the murk and you have rays of light everywhere. Great stuff. I'll try a few more listens to the symphonies, tthough, to see if I'm missing something.

Eautavaara belongs clearly to that new generation of compossrs that did not accept the radical changes rhat were brought by composers like Boulez, Stockhausen, Xenakis, whch means in fact Webern, and rutned to new forms od neoromantism or neo expressionism. The leader of that "counter-revolution" is obvously Penderecki, who made a spectacular " U-turnn" in his modes of expression. Nevrheless, these compsers have now a ffreedom of expression who leaves than a wide field to explore. It is not a "cliché" ro say that Rauravaara's music is as ample as the infinite boreal spaces of his native country.
