How to Write Your Introduction
Consult your supervisors or your department about the format of your thesis before starting to write. Institutions may vary in their requirements with regard to thesis-writing. Nevertheless, the following checklist provides some general guidelines.
Preliminary Checklist:
1. Consult your supervisors.
2. Familiarize yourself with the style or format of thesis
writing.
3. Decide on the word length. How many words your thesis
should be.
4. Learn more about referencing styles.
5. Make sure you have all the necessary information for the
reference section.
6. Learn about indexing of your thesis.
Once You Start Your Journey, Don’t Forget:
1. Read, read, and read: You cannot be a research student
unless you have read enough to understand what are you doing. What is research? What is a PhD? So, you need to read relevant literature and arm yourself with the relevant knowledge.
2. Write, write, and write: You should make sure that your writing is scholarly and use proper scientific terminologies. Keep your notes carefully and number them so that you can keep track of your progress.
3. Get feedback: When you are writing, discuss with friends and even with your family and ask for their feedback. If possible, discuss your research with people who are knowledgeable in your area of expertise so that they can assist you if necessary.
4. Publish your work: Each chapter of your thesis could be an article by itself. With slight modification, you could send it for publication in an international journal or conference. You would be surprised how much attention would be generated once your work is published. There are different types of journals that you can send your work to. Some journals have very stringent criteria for their selection of articles, and it may take a considerable time for your article to be accepted. You could opt for publication in journals that are not so demanding, just as a start-up.
5. Productive communication with your supervisors: Don’t forget your supervisor can either make or break you. Don’t annoy him/her, otherwise, you will never graduate. Talk to him/her humbly and ask politely for clarification if necessary. Take note of the discussion and date it. Follow your supervisor’s suggestions for corrections. Don’t be argumentative; respect his/her knowledge and show appreciation for his/her guidance. Keep all corrected chapters carefully, and I am sure once you graduate, you can’t stop laughing to yourself when you look at your PhD journey.
6. Read your seniors’ theses: It is always good to look at what your seniors have written and what methodologies they have applied. What type of problems, questions, and hypotheses did they document? Read, read, and read.

7. Familiarize yourself with relevant terminologies: A PhD thesis is a scholarly piece of work. Try to understand all scholarly terminologies. Go to the internet and search for explanations of the terminology that you do not understand. Read and read. You will soon realise that you are on board with your seniors.
