Zaraki Kenpachi vs Unohana Retsu FULL FIGHT

This fight is so great because Unohana forces Kenpachi to break down his mental barriers. By constantly killing him and reviving him she forces him to keep coming to the realization that "I am not the strongest, this isn't enough" and keep wittling away at his the barriers he has placed to hold back in fights. She has to kill him over, and over and over again. Because he want so desperately to enjoy the fight that he keep letting out minutely more power every time, even if it means it would kill him. She has to keep breaking him down, to his barest essence so that he can finally be free of all of his own restraints. She made it okay for him to go full power, the one thing he always wanted.

For those asking why Nozarashi didn't awaken until the fight was over. It is because of two reasons:

The first: Zapakuto reflect the wielders. Kenpachi wanted to purposely be weaker so his fights would last longer, so he could fight more without insta-gibbing his opponents. More than that he was lonely, he had never been able to build relationships with anyone. Ever. His Zanpakuto wanted to be closer to Kenny. So it became Yachiru.

The Second: Kenpachi had no name. He had always been "Kenpachi of Zaraki" since he became captain. It was a title. Before that, he had nothing. He didn't know who he was, so his Zanpakuto didn't either. This is reflected during the flashback scene with Yachiru where she meets him for the first time and he states broadly that she has no name either. He names her Yachiru after Unohana, but that still wasn't her real name, just like Kenpachi wasn't his. When he defeats Unohana, he truly inherits the name "Kenpachi". He is undoubtedly the strongest shinigami. Isane says as much when he reveals that he killed her. She states "You truly inherited the name of Captain Unohana".

Kenpachi became his name, not just his title, and because of this he could finally hear Nozarashi.

Unpopular opinion perhaps but I was very disappointed by this build up only for Zaraki to get zapped and absolutely mogged by some randos several chapters later.

I love Unohana's Zanpakuto. It's so fascinating how different her releases are. Her Shikai is "Minazuki", which means "Flesh-Goring Drops" (At least I believe so) and it's this large manta-ray like being that heals people with its stomach acids. Then her Bankai is again named "Minazuki", but it uses a different meaning which is "All Thing Must End" and instead of turning into this creature her sword becomes a whip of blud and her and the enemy are transported to what seems like Minazuki's belly, where seemingly the acid heals her and burns the enemy. Her Zanpakuto perfectly reflects the duality of her character
