I was lucky enough to be educated on a large property in MD farm country where a Montessori school is situated. The emphasis was on having a relationship with nature. Hearing you talk about the forest brings me back to that hollow, spending hours looking at the old growth around the creek valley and following the trees to the edge of the next pasture over.

I really appreciate your long view of both the past and the future. When we take that attitude, we can be better protectors and participants in our environment.

This man probably lives in the forest. It is good to have someone for a deeper input in foresting. Greetings from Lüneburg, Germany

I love this but hurts my heart knowing many trees near my home have came down rapidly within the last 15 years or so . Went from a tree city to sun baked sad . The weather and pests haven’t been good.

I've seen all these things. Some 50 to 60 years ago.
My new place has 40 acres mixed hardwood.
Now, I know a lot more about it.

anyone ignorant enough to incorporate the fallacy of leftist mandated "climate change" (give me a break, the climate has ALWAYS changed) while ignoring the benefits of altering the carbon starvation plagueing our forests, should not be listened to. They are deluded. It is sad that we have to discriminate this way, but survival is for the "fittest", not dream weavers or fallacy connivers. Tom does offer good information on trees, but not on politics (as "climate hoaxes" are considered)

Wow, Tom sure is optimistic at the end of this video. Compared to the dire forecasts regarding effects of climate change on forests coming from many other scientists, Tom describes a much more hopeful future. Don't you wish you could jump in a time machine and travel forward a few centuries to find out?

We have several open grown pasture Oak trees near our property that have since been overtaken by invasive wild honeysuckle. I've removed a lot of the honeysuckle but over the past 30 years I can see the "sentinels" as I call them are slowly succumbing to the encroaching forest.

I help tend a piece of land that is alvar up here in Canada. Rare limestone landscape with little soil. Very interesting combination of cedar & mixed conifer swamps and open dry areas with occasional isolated stunted old oaks. Had been partially cleared for ranching 100+ years ago then abandoned. My friend's dad bought it in the 90s and cut some of the now mature white pines and built a log home. LOTS of juniper but I think it is due to the happy combination of rock cracks in the limestone and little competition due to the rough environment limiting the species. I wonder how old cattle grazing affected things. I love walking around trying to sort the sequence of activity. I will be counting pine whorls... I will be buying Tom's books. :)

I live in sw Pa, and some of the things I find in our forests are old charcoal pits and abandoned iron furnaces. I have on rare occasions also found American Chestnut trees that seem to grow to about 6 to 8 inches dia. before succumbing to blight. Some I found actually produced mast. I really enjoyed your series, thank you.
