Founded in 1951 by dentist Dr. Alfons Weber. The Swakopmund Museum is the largest privately run museum in Namibia. It accommodates displays ranging from zoology, geology, archaeology and technology as well as present and historical exhibits of Namibian culture and our people.
The museum shop offers a large variety of books, postcards and souvenirs. Visitors can even send your post from here. Interesting local videos are shown at the Swakopmund Museum upon request between 11:00 and 13:00.
Guided tours by request are offered.
Museum is located at the heart of Swakopmund facing the beautiful Mole beach, only seconds away from the ocean, cafés, restaurants, and anything the heart desires. You can find us by heading towards the lighthouse and down to the beach from there. Parking is available along the Mole or on Strand Street.

Both the Swakopmund Museum and the Sam Cohen Library are wheelchair friendly.
Namibian Sign Language Tours of the Museum are available upon request.
A wheelchair is available at the front desk on a first-come, first-served basis.
Audio descriptive tours of the museum are available for booking. In addition to this we will soon offer a blind friendly zone which allows for tactile exploration.
Night at the Museum
A “Night at the Museum” had been an event that museum team had been wanting to do for a very long time. It was decided that 2023 is the year to do it. For the 10th and 19th of March 2023 museum invited people to come and enjoy an evening in the Swakopmund Museum. During the planning phase staff realized that they want to accomplish three goals: being educational and informative, a little scary and bringing heritage and culture to life.
The Swakopmund Museum came alive as the curator guided the visitors through a partially lit Museum. Visitors heard the story of Captain Salvador’s to South West Africa, as he embarked on the journey in an ox wagon with an older “Oom” who told a tale of stolen gold. The tour also featured a search for the resident ghost and an evil dentist who just wanted to take the naughty children’s teeth. Finally, staff ended up with “8th Octaves”, a local Marimba Band, as they brought culture alive and everyone was swept into dance and singing. On the second evening museum had a special visitors from the Snake Park: the scorpions lit up eerily in ultraviolet light. Of course, there were many more funny and scary moments. The “Night at the Museum” will be repeated.
