Alan Shepard: The First American in Space

In 1961, Alan B. Shepard Jr. became the first American to travel into space during the Freedom 7 mission. It wasn’t a long trip—just over 15 minutes—but it was a major victory for the United States in the space race against the USSR.

A decade later, Shepard was still making history, this time as commander of Apollo 14 in 1971. He walked on the Moon, conducted scientific experiments, and—because why not—hit a couple of golf balls on the lunar surface.

Beyond his missions, Shepard served as NASA's Chief of the Astronaut Office, where he helped train future astronauts and plan upcoming missions. His contributions were monumental, and he continues to inspire space enthusiasts today!
