Sirtuins are a family of highly conserved proteins that play a crucial role in maintaining cellular homeostasis and regulating cellular processes such as DNA repair, metabolism, and apoptosis. There are seven sirtuin genes (SIRT1-7) in humans, and their activation has been shown to improve genomic stability and promote healthy aging.
One of the primary mechanisms by which sirtuin activation improves genomic stability is through the regulation of DNA repair pathways. Sirtuins are known to promote DNA repair by activating key enzymes involved in base excision repair, nucleotide excision repair, and homologous recombination repair. Additionally, sirtuins can deacetylate and activate the tumor suppressor protein p53, which plays a critical role in DNA damage response and repair.
